2 Assignment 1 The ethical rules are what are also called “Guiding Principles.” For the NIH Clinical Center such principles include but are not limited to: social and clinical value, scientific validity, fair subject selection, favorable risk-benefit ratio, independent review, informed consent and respect for potential and enrolled subjects. These are just seven of their main principles. There are three specific groups that require protection from research. Those groups include: pregnant women, human fetuses, and neonates; children; and prisoners. It is important for researchers to keep in mind that risks may vary for particular groups. Informed consent is when potential participants should make their own decisions about whether they want to participate or continue participating in research. This is done when three things occur. The first is when individuals are accurately informed of the purpose, methods, risks, benefits, and alternatives to the research. Second, individuals understand this information and how it relates to their own clinical situation or interests. Lastly, individuals make a voluntary decision about whether to participate. Research should be designed to have the least amount of harm done when it comes to humans and nonhuman entities. So, humans and nonhumans are practically protected in the same way for research. Although, with nonhumans, there would be an organization that would need to monitor and enforce that nonhumans or animals would be treated humanely throughout the experiment being done. To get a potential research project approved, the party wanting to conduct the research would need to find out the requirements that would need to be met by the committee that would be granting approval and meet those requirements.
