In “Healing Traditions: Culture, Community, and Mental Health Promotion with Canadian Aboriginal Peoples”, the concept of empowering communities for mental health efforts, was a discussion that my group and I enjoyed the most. Personally, I really liked how this notion goes beyond simply assisting individuals in need and delves into the importance of strengthening communities to foster resilience and well-being collectively. Empowering communities to me, means to provide them with the tools, resources, and support they need to not only address mental health challenges, but also to thrive emotionally and spiritually within their environments. A valid point that myself and other members of my group brought forward is the fact that the reserves even now, often don’t get the help or resources needed to get help, compared to other places. This includes things like healthcare, schools or jobs. Because of this, people on reserves often face more challenges, especially with their mental health. To make things better, the answer is simple, we need to make sure reserves get more help and resources, and this is where we believe that mental health efforts need to go beyond just helping individuals and instead focus on empowering entire communities. Empowering communities creates a ripple effect, and this means that positive changes in one individual can inspire and motivate others to seek help and engage in self-care practices. Resources can include, providing access to culturally appropriate mental health services and resources tailored to the needs of the community. Culturally appropriate mental health services are those that are respectful of and responsive to the cultural beliefs, values and transitions of the community. By having mental health professionals with the expertise in cultural competence and understanding of the communities context, these services can eventually effectively bridge cultural gaps, build trust, and will allow for individuals to feel more comfortable and supported in their healing process.
