2 Escape Extinction A treatment that is commonly used in behavioral analysis is extinction. Cooper et al. (2020) stated that extinction is when a person does not reinforce a specific behavior and that extinction is mostly used to decrease a problem behaviors. It has been shown that some individuals with disabilities could partake in unwanted behaviors in order to avoid stimuli that they do not prefer. Some types on unwanted stimuli for individuals is specific tasks or food or even a outfit that they do not prefer. In order to decrease some of the unwanted behavior professionals may need to use interventions do decrease escape behaviors by using a practice called escape extinction. Escape extinction is a procedure where someone withholds escape contingent on the clients participating in problem behavior. (Cooper et al., 2020) Pros of Escape Extinction Treatment When it comes to treatments there are always pros and cons to each one regardless of how much it is backed by science and data. Pros to escape extinction is using treatments such as prompting visual and physical, and response blocking. Escape extinction can be paired with other treatment options which allows for the overall treatment to be more effective when it comes to decreasing the problem behavior. Pros of escape extinction is that the treatment plan for this that is has long term effects of decreasing problem behaviors for clients. Another pro of escape extinction is that is does not cause the behavioral analysis to increase the number of time prompts or response blocking is used. Cons of Escape Extinction Treatment When it comes to escape extinction treatment there are cons to this kind of treatment. Sometimes when a behavioral analysis is trying to decrease or stop a problem behavior they could cause a increase in aggression or different types of problem behavior. Other cons to this
3 type of treatment is behavioral analysis will asks parents/guardians along with teachers to help implement the treatment plan which can have a negative effect on the treatment. Escape extinction has a treatment plan of restrictive procedures that include full physical prompts which can harm the client physically or cause emotional trauma/distress. A con of restrictive procedures are that they can cause the effectiveness of the treatment to decrease along with worsening the long term outcome. Most of all restrictive procedures are not allowed in most schools, or other organizations. Evaluation of Ethics Behavioral analysis are required to treat clients on treatment plans that are based on behavioral practices, principles, and ensure that they are evidence based. Behavioral analysis also need to ensure that their treatments do not cause any harm to the client in anyway shape or form. It is essential that behavioral analysis uphold and practice the ethics code to ensure that the client is treated with respect, dignity, compassion, and with competence. While using the escape extinction procedure it is important that the behavioral analysis keep some of these ethics codes in mind. Number 1 Do No Harm, 2.09 providing effective treatment, 07 Treating Others with Care and Compassion and ensuring they are doing number 2.08 Disclosing information. The code of ethics is put into play when escape extinction is used as a treatment plan by ensuring that no harm comes to the client either physical or mental. When treating a client regardless of what treatment plan is in place every client should be treated with respect, dignity, integrity, and compassion. For instance I have recently been on crutches due to my back and I hate when those around me step in and do things for me. I felt that it took away my dignity, this is how some of the clients feel when they are not given the time to do something on their own.
