Diagnostic Case Scenario Wendy Olalde SPD-531 Dr. JodiAnn Pantry 1/7/2024
Introduction Special Education has evolved a lot since its start in 1975, there have been many changes and each student who is involved in exceptional education requires a unique path of services and support. A lot of services and support such as assessments are available for students. Some are formal and some informal, but both help their teacher assess and place students in their correct setting for a positive learning experience. There are many assessments available, but the ones needed are reviewed by the Multidisciplinary Evaluation team who collaborate and decide which are best. After reading through Scott’s case study, I had to look at a few assessments before I could decide. After much review I decided that the assessments that would best fit his needs would be the Conners-3 rd edition assessment, the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-2 nd edition, and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-3 rd edition. These assessments will help determine the best placement for Scott. Assessments During my review of Scott’s case, t he concerns that were noted which led to a referral were that he struggles with authority and often exhibits aggressive and disruptive behavior as he does not like instructional time or follow directions. Due to these things, I think the best assessment to use would be The Conners 3 assessment. I chose this because it “will help determine whether any symptoms a child or teen may be displaying are indicative of ADHD.” ( Marschall, 2023 ) Conners 3 looks at how a child focuses on things such as during instructional time, and measures their level of hyperactivity, and aggression. In the case of Scott, he exhibits aggressive behavior and disruptive behavior during teacher instruction and when given instructional. He also needs consistent redirection throughout the day. Scotts family history
shows that he an older sibling who was already diagnosed with ADHD which could be an indication that Scott is also suffering from ADHD. Reading the back story on Scott, it was stated that he is active and stopped taking naps at an early age. I would suggest an assessment called Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scaled-2 nd edition. This assessment has been a leading measure of personal and social skills needed for everyday living which help in diagnosing intellectual and developmental disabilities. (APA PsycNet, n.d.) This assessment is administered in the form of an interview with the individual and in the case of Scott it would shed light on him not being able to behave in the community. His parents have reported that they refuse to take him out in public to his behavior and it becomes overwhelming for them and him because he struggles with being out in a public setting. They did not enroll him in summer programs due to this behavior and his struggles with interacting with other kids his age. The third assessment I chose after a little research was the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-3 rd edition (WIAT-III). The WIAT-III is an academic assessment that assesses a broad range of skills like Reading, Writing, Mathematics, and Oral Language and it does this by having the child engage in a variety of tasks which are divided into three scales. AT-III | Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (n.d.) Currently, there is no data on Scott which makes it hard to determine any placement for him. The case study of Scott shows that he refuses to participate in any informal or formal activities and becomes disruptive. Also, another note is that if it is something he is not interested in he will not participate at all. These assessments are the first step into gaining crucial data for him.
