Report
Tom, 45, occasionally went to the casino with some friends as a fun night out, but lately he noticed himself returning there on his own, spending hours at a time at a single blackjack table. His friends asked him about it, but he brushed off their concerns. As time passed, he spent more time at the casino and often lied to his wife about it. Based on what you have learned in this module about motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral restructuring, and solution-focused therapy, which approach or approaches do you think are most relevant for Tom's situation? Within your discussion, address the following points: Based on what you have learned in this module, what are two techniques within each of the three counseling styles that you think might be relevant to Tom's situation? Be sure to discuss a total of six techniques, two for each of the three counseling styles. Why do you think the approach(es) you chose would be helpful in Tom's situation (be specific and detailed)? Good evening: Motivational interviewing is when a counselor focuses on topics and methods that encourage an individual to change their current behavior. According to our textbook “. MI is not a theory of counseling; rather, it is a transtheoretical approach to the change process that encompasses both an attitude and set of techniques designed to elicit and enhance a client’s internal change processes” ( Foundations of Addictions Counseling , 2019). Within this counseling style, two techniques that may be relevant to Tom’s situation would be asking open-ended questions and reflective listening. By using open-ended questions you are allowing Tom to express how he feels about the topics discussed and not short responses like “yes” and “no”. By using reflective listening you are helping Tom give answers to your questions that will help move his change process along. Cognitive behavioral restructuring is a process in which an individual is inspired to understand their negative emotions and thoughts and turn them into more positive and productive ones. Withing this counseling style, two techniques that may be relevant to Tom’s situation would be to identify what triggers him and his history. Learning these key components in his life will allow Tom to reflect on what is making him progressively stay at the casino and lie to his wife and friends about it. It will highlight situations in his life that were negative and bring them to the surface so he can reflect on them and turn them into positive strengths. By learning his triggers and
being aware of them can assist him to know when he is in a dangerous situation. Solution-focused therapy applied to addiction is an approach that focuses on the individuals' strengths and uses them to develop goals that help with their addiction. Withing this counseling style, two techniques that may be relevant to Tom’s situation would be affirmation and enhancing confidence. This will allow Tom to see the positive things in his life and use them as power to overcome his situation. Recourses: Capuzzi, D., & Stauffer, M. D. (2019).
