Report
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) present a wide range of behaviors that impact the family system through relational challenges, time allocated to supporting the child, financial resources spent on interventions, and challenges between siblings (Kress et al., 2019, p. 362). Parents and siblings, or any others in the immediate family, may experience stress and difficulties as they learn to navigate a relationship with the individual with ASD as they may not express love and affection in the same ways. Individuals with ASD can also struggle with unexpected changes in routines and schedules, or being overstimulated by their environments, leading the family to prioritize these considerations above others in the family (Kress et al., 2019, p. 362). This can be particularly difficult for siblings as they may experience feelings of embarrassment if they have awkward social interactions with their sibling with ASD (Kress et al., 2019, p. 362). Having a child with ASD not only impacts with relationship between the child with ASD and others but can also place strain on the other interpersonal relationships in the family (Begum & Mamin, 2019). "(R)esearch [has] found that parents of children with ASD have more divorce rate than parents who do not have a child with a developmental disability (Begum & Mamin, 2019)". Begum, R., & Mamin, F. A.
