Pre-Assessment   A.   1.   An area of strength in the pre-assessment is key/signal words. The data is supported with fifteen students answered the question correctly, out of 20 students. There was an 85-90% correct per question rate for this area. 2.   A potential problem area in the pre-assessment is solutions. There was a 20-55% correct per question rate for this area. Students’ struggled with this area.   B.  I would recommend adjusting the “Anticipatory Set” instruction by showing additional videos to expand on problem solution and by using the vocabulary/academic language in a realistic context.   Informal Formative Assessment   C.   1.   An area of strength is key/signal words. The data supports this as a strength because 17 out of 20 students were proficient in the area. 2.   A problem area is solutions. The date supports this as a weakness because 9 out of 20 students were not proficient in the area.   D.   •   The class as a whole was strong and proficient in key/sight words for both the pre- assessment and informal formative assessment. The class struggled with the problem, having an average proficiency of 30%, and they struggled with the solution, having an average proficiency 20%. After the informal formative assessment, the class was 75% proficiency in problem and 55% proficient in solution. •   Student 17 demonstrated growth. Student 17 answered 2/10 questions correct, receiving a 20% overall score in the pre-assessment, getting all four questions in the solution section incorrect. After the teacher concluded the informal formative assessment, student 17 showed to be proficient in 2/3 sections and gained proficiency in key/sight words and solution. •   Student 20 did not show growth from the pre-assessment to the informal formative assessment. Student 20 was proficient in key/sight words, but received a 30% overall score in the pre-assessment. After the teacher concluded the informal formative assessment, student 20 was still proficient in key/sight words, but no progress as made towards proficiency in problems and solutions. 1.   The feedback I would give to the class would be overall positive. They were solid in the key/sight word section, they improved massively in understanding the problem, and they was progression in proficiency to the solution. I would also give them feedback in the form of thumbs up and hang fives. I would give positive, honest feedback to Student 17 because growth was shown from the pre-assessment to the informal formative assessment. Student 17 is an emerging EL that progresses quickly with correct scaffolding, and she improved after the informal formative assessment. Student 20 did not show growth after the informal formative assessment. I would give feedback that encourages student 20 to ask questions for clarity. I would have a low level interaction that is calm but encouraging to push. A pep-talk can spark learning. Summative Assessment   E.   1.   The area of strength is key/sight words after the summative assessment. The data supports this as a strength by a 90% proficiency rate.
2.   A remaining problem after the summative assessment is the solution section. The data supports the problem because the proficiency rate is 40%. 3.   Non-proficiency for the area of problem could be caused by the students not being able to make the connection and identify the problem in the text after the summative assessment. The students may be struggling with the critical response questions. Non-proficiency in solutions for the students could be caused by mixing up the solution and problem in the text after the summative assessment. The students may be struggling with the fill in the blank questions and flipping the solution and problem could cause confusion. F.   •   The class as a whole improved. The pre-assessment overall score was 20% and the summative assessment was an overall score of 80%. •   Student 17 demonstrated the most growth, scoring 20% overall on the pre-assessment and improving to a 75% on the summative assessment. •   Student 8 did not show growth, scoring a 50% on the pre-assessment and a 30% on the summative assessment. 1.   The feedback I would give to the class is applause and cheers for the overall improve, a 60% increase in overall score is moving towards mastery. The feedback to student 17 would be positive and proud for showing a 55% improvement from the pre-assessment to the summative assessment. Student 8 did not show growth and the feedback I would give would be questioning and probing to see where the struggle is and how we can move past it.   G.   •   I would adjust the Presentation Procedures for New Information and/or Modeling to include more planned language support to help improve sentence framing to understanding identify the problem in the text. •   I would adjust the Guided Practice to include a brief review of prior knowledge of the text content to further guide the students to understand the difference between the problem and the solution. 1.   I believe my recommendation to include more planned language support to help improve proficiency will support student learning because it will guide the students on sentence framing. I believe my recommendation to include a brief review of prior knowledge of the text will support student learning by sparking an interest in the text and engage them in the activity.
