Assessment and Treatment NAME PROFESSOR NAME
Knowing what a child is experiencing from a diagnosis- or even symptoms-standpoint can be groundbreaking for helping children and adolescents receive the necessary accommodations for their specific needs (Mash & Wolfe, 2018). Children all learn and grow at different rates, but when a disorder goes undiagnosed, it can be a challenge for that child to live up to their full potential. Psychometric tests can be crucial for understanding and measuring deficits and disorders in children cognitively, psychosocially, and neurodevelopmentally. However, an assessment is only accurate if its criteria and diagnostic tools are current and relevant (Cohen, 2022). Accurate assessments and testing tools are necessary to ensure every child is properly diagnosed. Early intervention has been proven beneficial and effective, especially when it comes to those who are on the autism spectrum (Rosaryfilms, 2009). Early intervention can only be implemented through early detection, which is why it is important for parents, teachers, caregivers, and physical & mental health professionals to remain observant. Early intervention is ineffective, however, if the treatment recommended for a diagnosis is harmful, outdated, or even simply unhelpful. It is important that as professionals work to keep their assessments for diagnoses up to date, they keep the next steps in treatment relevant, as well (Cohen, 2022). It is imperative that mental health professional adhere to the APA’s code of ethics (American Psychiatric Association, 2017). Those conducting psychometric testing must consider every individual’s multifaceted genetic makeup and physical build in addition to their environment and childhood upbringing. Psychology is a nature and nurture conversation, and it is important that assessments for disorders reflect that (Cohen, 2022).
