Task 5D: Nicholas In task 5D Nicholas gets tested on many things. The first step is to determine when the second cup has the same amount of water as the first. Nicholas does this with certainty and confidence. Nicholas was then asked what would happen to the water when a ball of orange playdough is placed into it. The literal meaning of Nicholas' answer was that the water would change color. Nicholas was then asked if the water level would move or stay the same. Nicholas said that the water would move up the glass. By using the second glass to determine if the water level rose, Nicholas was able to see and determine that the water level rose when the playdough was put into glass one. When asked if they put the second ball of dough into the second glass would the water level rise or stay the same? Nicholas guessed it would be the same as glass one. The dough was then removed from the second glass and moulded into a curved shape. When asked if the water would rise up and be the same Nicholas responded that it would rise up but not as much as the dough was curved. Nicholas was surprised when the water level rose the same amount. When asked why it increased by the same amount. Nicholas responded that it was because it was the same amount of playdough. Based on his analysis of this video, Nicholas is in the Concrete operations stage. Which is defined by children being able to decentre and think logically about concrete objects and experiences (Bergin et al., 2022, p.132) Nicholas is working towards the level of Conservation. Berk defines Conservation as the idea that certain physical characteristics of objects remain the same, even when their outward appearance changes (Berk, 2013, p.244). While still showing signs of being in the Preoperations stage of Perception Bound. McLeod says that the understanding of perception bound means the child is drawn by the changes in the appearance of the materials to conclude that a change has occurred (McLeod, 2007).
