Report
Describe the prevalence in society of the disorder you researched. Trichotillomania is a diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5 th Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5, TR) given to individuals who repeatedly pull out their own hair to the extent that it causes hair loss and leads to clinical distress (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). The hair-pulling and hair loss can occur anywhere on the body, including the head, facial hair, and eyelashes (Bezerra et al, 2021). Bezerra et al. (2021) report the prevalence of trichotillomania is around 1-3% of the population, and is believed to be more common in females. In a sample of Brazilians with trichotillomania surveyed by Bezerra et al (2021), probable trichotillomania was often associated with depression, alcohol abuse, tobacco use, and even suicidal ideation. The authors note that alcohol and nicotine use also involve repetitive behaviors, similar to trichotillomania. Explain how a client’s culture influences their understanding of the disorder. Trichotillomania presents similarly across cultures (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). Understanding of the disorder may be influenced by culture. Bezerra et al. (2022) note that many who have trichotillomania seek dermatological or medical treatment, as opposed to mental health treatment. This may be related to a cultural stigma regarding mental health issues, which could impair understanding of trichotillomania as a mental, not medical, issue.
