2 Evaluation of Research Design Components The purpose of each section in a typical research article is to summarize the study and its goal. Each section addresses a different objective. The first section is the introduction of the problem that is being addressed or in other words, the research question. This section gives background information on the study and explains why the study is important. The next section describes the methodology. This section states the procedures that were used in the study including the participants, what measures were taken to measure the data, and the techniques that were used. The results section follows next. This section presents what was observed in a clear and concise matter often using tables, charts, and graphs. Leading to the discussion section next. In this section the results are interpreted, then compared to previous research results and their implications are discussed. Finally, is the conclusion section. This section summarizes the main findings and the significance in relation to the research question or hypothesis (McBride, 2019). The Steps to Critically Evaluate Research Articles and How the Scientific Method Helps Research articles are a critical tool for successfully navigating this complex world we live in. Without it, everyone would be forced to rely solely on our intuition, other people’s authority, and blind luck. While many individuals feel confident in their abilities to decipher and interact with the world around them, history is filled with examples of how very wrong they can be when they fail to recognize the need for evidence in supporting claims. According to (Numerade, 2023), The scientific method is a set of assumptions, rules, and procedures scientists use to conduct research. And involves a systematic process that focuses on being objective and gathering information for an analysis so that the research can conclude. The first step is the process of identifying the problem by observing and asking questions. The second step is gathering background information and reviewing literature. The third step is to clarify the
3 problem by creating a hypothesis. The fourth step is clearly defining terms and concepts by creating a prediction and performing test. The fifth step is to analyze the results and draw a conclusion. The sixth step is to share the conclusion or decide what questions to ask next. The seventh step is documenting the results of your experiment so that others can add to your findings and expand the knowledge. The two articles I chose explores the impact of financial exploitation and stereotyping on seniors physical, neurocognitive, and emotional health and the process of stereotyping in an area where older adults face difficulty trying to fit into a changing environment. The Importance of Research in Behavioral Sciences Human behavioral research plays a significant role in uplifting the livelihood s of people suffering from mental illness and behavioral disorders (Villegas, 2022). Behavioral research is a combination of qualitative and qualitative methods to measure human behavior, get new data, and analyze the effects of active treatment situations on human behaviors. Behavior research uses measurements and interpretation to explore and comprehend individual and societal behaviors. In the two articles I chose the examination of senior’s well-being and conduct is an important aspect of behavioral science (Boulton-Lewis, 2010). It allows researchers to understand how a range of factors, such as social interactions, daily routines, and environmental conditions impact the overall quality of life for older adults. By studying these aspects, policymakers and businesses can develop strategies to promote positive behavior and improve the well-being of seniors in society. The Relationship Between Applied Research and Basic Research Both basic and applied research are methods used to gather information and analyze facts that help build knowledge around a subject. However, basic research uses logical understanding
