Negative biases may lead to stigmatization and discrimination, making it harder for individuals to seek help and support. Beliefs/assumptions about substance use disorder can also shape the recovery process. For example, the belief that addiction is a moral failing or lack of willpower can hinder recovery by attributing blame and shame to individuals rather than recognizing it as a complex medical condition. Various factors can influence society's engagement with the topic of substance use disorder. One factor is media representation and portrayal. The way the media portrays substance use disorder can impact public perceptions and attitudes toward the issue. It may contribute to stigma and misconceptions if depicted negatively or sensationalized. However, if media coverage promotes understanding, empathy, and evidence-based solutions, it can help change societal attitudes and increase engagement with the topic. A lack of knowledge about substance use disorder may lead to misconceptions and stereotypes. Providing accurate and comprehensive information about the causes, effects, and treatment options for substance use disorder can help dispel myths and encourage open discussions ( Harm Reduction , n.d.). Additionally, access to resources and support services can be crucial in engaging society with the topic. Individuals with easy access to treatment options, support groups, and community programs are likelier to engage with the issue and seek help when needed. Overall, addressing societal biases, improving education, and increasing accessibility to support services are essential for shaping positive engagement and perceptions of substance use disorder. 4-2 ACTIVITY 1

One potential obstacle that could interfere with the population's engagement with recovery from substance use disorder is the lack of accessible and affordable treatment options. The barriers that many individuals who struggle with substance use disorder face while seeking help are: • Financial limitations • Long waitlists for treatment programs • Limited availability of specialized care These barriers can discourage individuals from seeking help or delay their access to necessary support. The second obstacle is the societal stigma surrounding substance use disorder, which can also act as an obstacle to engagement with recovery. People may fear judgment, discrimination, or adverse consequences if they disclose their struggle with substance use disorder, leading to secrecy and isolation. Stigma can also deter individuals from seeking treatment or support services due to concerns about how others perceive them. Misconceptions and stereotypes about addiction can perpetuate shame and prevent individuals from recognizing the need for help or accessing appropriate resources. Addressing these obstacles requires increasing the availability and affordability of evidence- based treatment options, reducing stigma through education and awareness campaigns, and promoting a compassionate and understanding society. By overcoming these barriers, individuals can actively engage with recovery and receive the support they need to achieve lasting wellness. Critical analysis can help you identify underlying problems, evaluate different solutions, and make informed decisions in day-to-day responsibilities or questions in your field or discipline to areas like problem-solving, decision-making, research, and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions or strategies.
