Destiny Adams December 1,2023 Child Development EDUC-1004-1 Marsha Miller MS. Ed 1. As in all stages of development, brain growth is an important influence on children—physically, cognitively, and socially and emotionally. Review pages 226 - 230 in your course text and then explain how continuing development in the prefrontal cortex area of the brain can affect young children's readiness to enter the more structured environments of kindergarten and the primary grades. Considering that each child develops in his or her unique way, what are some of the challenges (physically, cognitively, and socially and emotionally) that children might encounter when they start formal schooling such as kindergarten, despite being the appropriate age? A young child's preparation for formal education can be impacted by prefrontal cortex brain development in a number of ways. Executive functions like impulse control, problem solving, and decision making are handled by this region of the brain. Children get better at
managing their behavior, adhering to rules, and adjusting to new routines as their prefrontal cortex continues to develop. Since they are expected to adhere to rules and routines, this enables them to function better in the structured environment of kindergarten and primary grades. But since every child develops differently, beginning formal education may present difficulties. Due to delayed prefrontal cortex development, some children may have difficulty controlling their impulses and adhering to rules. This may lead to behavioral issues and trouble adjusting to the school's structure. Furthermore, some kids might find it difficult to control their emotions and cope with the demands of the classroom, which can hinder their social and emotional growth. 2.Between the ages of 3 and 7, children's fine- and gross-motor skills advance considerably. Review “Visualizing Development- Developing Motor Skills on page 231 of your course text. Based on the information you have learned from the Learning Resources for this week, explain at least two ways changes in motor competency may impact children's development and skills in the cognitive domain and in the social and emotional domain.
Variations in motor competency can have a variety of effects on children's skills and development in the social and emotional, as well as cognitive domains. Jumping, running, and throwing are examples of gross motor skills that help children develop their balance, coordination, and body control. They are able to participate in more sophisticated motor activities, which can enhance their problem- solving abilities and have a positive effect on their cognitive development. As children are able to engage in activities and sports alongside their peers, enhanced gross motor skills can contribute to enhanced self-esteem and confidence in terms of social and emotional development. However, the ability to use utensils, draw, and tie shoelaces requires fine motor skills, which can also have an impact on a child's development. In addition to being essential for academic tasks like writing and drawing, fine motor skills can have an impact on a child's cognitive development and academic success. Children with delayed fine motor skills may experience challenges in activities requiring hand-eye coordination, which can impact their confidence and self- esteem. This can have a negative impact on the social and emotional development of the child.
