Description of Student: Alex is a 1st grade student at Marcy Open Schools. He is 7 years old with ASD. Alex is a very bright student but he struggles with being off task. Off Task Behavior : Off task behaviors are defined as engagement in any tasks other than the assigned task or ongoing activity for more than 5 seconds. Examples: Examples of off-task behavior for Alex include wandering around the room during work time and instruction, talking to peers/teachers/aides, playing with materials, and looking around the classroom. Non-examples: Using a fidget toy during instruction, asking a question related to the subject matter we are working on, getting up to get a drink, looking out the window for less than 5 seconds. Data Summary: One of the behaviors that Alex struggles with is walking off without saying anything. He will hide in a shelf or go play with toys when he is supposed to be doing something else. Alex seems to always want to do his own thing, but he might feel like he lacks a sense of control. Another challenging behavior that Alec struggles with is interrupting. He won a medal in the special ed classroom one day and announced it to his whole gen ed class when he walked in. Alex does have some setting events that might affect his behavior. He has been struggling with a bowel issue lately and has been pooping his pants. Some adults in his life, one of them being one of his teachers Laura, thought that he was doing this on purpose and it causes him some embarrassment. There are also personal things that have been affecting Alex’s behavior. His family is moving soon and he has been antsy anticipating that. There is also a noticeable change in Alex’s behavior when his dad is out of town for work. An antecedent to Alex’s behavior is transition times. He really seems to struggle when transitioning from the classroom to other activities and when there are new teachers involved. He especially struggles to stay on task during the short 30 minute period between lunch and centers time. The consequences to Alex’s problem behavior are getting yelled at or redirected and getting things taken away from him when he is not using them appropriately. A consequence to Alex’s positive behavior is verbal praise. Reflection:
Preliminary hypothesis of behavior function : During centers time Alex is often off task, talking with peers, running off or wandering around the room, or using school materials inappropriately. Based on preliminary observations and information gathered from his teacher, the likely function of Alex’s off task behavior is to gain access to preferred activities. I think some additional information that would always be helpful to understand Alex’s behavior is anything that happened previously in his day because he has a tendency to say whatever is on his mind. For example, when Alex’s brother, who is in 5th grade, had a unit on reproduction, Alex began asking his teachers questions about reproduction. An advantage of the interview process is that you can get in depth data about a student's behavior and the settings it occurs in. Another advantage is that you can personalize the interview to get specific information about a student. A disadvantage of the interview process is that I only got one perspective. The teacher I interviewed didn’t have as much information on antecedents as I would have liked because most of the problem behavior occurs in the general ed class. Another disadvantage is that it was difficult to find time outside of my scheduled time to be at the school to meet with my teacher because we are both so busy, but we made it work. Overall, I liked the interview process because I got a lot of information about my student that I don’t think I could have gotten if I didn’t talk to my teacher face to face.
