Describe your experience practicing this technique and how this experience influences your choice on whether to use it with a client during practice. I chose a shorter mindfulness exercise that was breath and body focused. I love mindfulness exercises, guided meditations, and yoga. My reaction was positive and I could feel myself become more grounded and more aware. By focusing on the sensations in my body and the intentional breaths, I was forced to quiet my mind and could sense that “let down” of the chaos of the day. I think that for certain clients these types of exercises are hugely positive for starting sessions. I have used them during group work with teenagers and it was a great way to get them to still, shed whatever they brought in with them from the hallways, and to focus their energy and mind on where they were and the group goals. In 1–2 sentences, briefly summarize the methodological context (i.e., research method, how data was collected, and the instruments used) of the studies and the findings. The study I located is a randomized control study of a community based sample utilizing a pre and post-test assessments. The study deployed a trauma informed model of mindfulness stress reduction (referred to as “TI-MBSR”) for women who had experienced interpersonal violence. Women indicating a history with interpersonal violence were assigned at random to an 8-week TI-MBSR intervention or a waitlist with the waitlist serving as the control group. The findings of the study I located indicate that the symptoms of trauma were decreased related to PTSD and depressive symptoms. These were noted as clinically and significantly decreased where anxious and avoidant attachment was found to be significantly reduced. Most participants completed 5 of the 8 sessions and the minutes of mindfulness exercises performed predicted reductions in PTSD symptoms and indicate a positive intervention (Kelly & Garland, 2016). Analyze the findings in terms of their validity and applicability for the client. For my case study client Ella, this intervention seems highly appropriate. Ella experienced interpersonal trauma by way of physical abuse from her father and a secondary trauma at the emotional abandonment and lack of safety provided by her mother after an abusive incident. Ella’s symptoms mirror that of the study participants. Although the median age of the participants is far older than Ella, the fact that her PTSD, attachment issues, and anxiety are all similar make it a good fit as an intervention for Ella.
