Chapter 1 Activity 2: Self-Concept Evaluation Name Nicole Solymon ______________________ Lab Purpose The purpose of this activity is to help students understand self-concept as well as to evaluate their own self-concepts. Procedure Check the attribute from each pair that best describes you. After completing the self-evaluation, answer the questions that follow it. Self-Concept Evaluation Are you generally 1__X __relaxed or _____ anxious? 2__X __in good shape or _____ poor shape? 3__X __adventurous or _____ conservative? 4__X __trim or _____ overweight? 5__X __ hardworking or _____ lazy? 6__X __ambitious or _____ aimless? 7__X __strong or _____ weak? 8__X __physically attractive or _____ unattractive? 9__X _persistent or _____ not persistent? 10__X __extroverted or _____ introverted? 11__X __self-confident or _____ insecure? 12__X __a leader or _____ a follower? Questions Answers to the following questions should be either typed or neatly written on a separate sheet and attached to the lab report. 1. Are there areas of your self-concept that you would like to improve? Make a list. I would say my top two areas of my self-concept that I would like to improve upon would be my weight and appearance. For all of my life I was always skinny fat, and had just enough muscle to perform my sports. I played basketball and ice hockey growing up, and this made me very endurant, but also hungry for carbs. Recently, almost three years ago now, I started weight lifting and tracking my calories and macronutrients. This has given me the opportunity to understand how my individual body functions, and what to do to keep in better shape. As for my appearance, I have gradually incorporated new styles and techniques to better improve my attractiveness. I have embraced taking ice baths and cold showers, stretching daily, eating very clean, wearing age-appropriate clothing, and maintaining a rigorous hygiene routine.
2. Suggest personal strategies for improving two self-concept areas that you identified in the first question. Some personal strategies for improving two self-concept areas that I had identified are writing out what methods of self-improvement one would like to do, meditating and spending quality time with oneself, and spending time in nature. I believe these strategies can help any person with any problem they have in their lives. I say this because I practice these strategies dailey, and I have seen so much positive progress and growth. Physically writing down what one wants to do, whether it is a list or instructions, has shown improvement in focus and memory, as well as reducing anxiety. Meditation is an essential skill to master because it strengthens patience, provides new perspectives to situations, and makes one very self-aware. Lastly, spending time in nature. This simple activity improves mood, enhances confidence, and promotes relaxation within the body’s nervous system. Chapter 2 Activity 1: Stress Evaluation Name Nicole Solymon ______________________ Lab Purpose The purpose of this activity is to help you understand the concept of stress and how it is related to health issues (and later in the term, how it is inversely related to athletic performance). Procedure Complete the stress evaluation below. Add up all of the points for each stressor listed. It is possible that you have had similar stressors but they have different names than those on this list. A break-up with a long-term girl- or boyfriend. You should score such events using points from a similar event (such as separation = 65 points). Failing or doing poorly in a class = 45 points. A major financial stress at school = 31 points. You can estimate scores for major stressors over the past year by using points for similar stressors. Score all the events that have occurred in the past two years. Note: Your stress score and comments are confidential. This list from Roth and Holmes (1985) contains certain life events, both positive and negative, that have been identified as stressful. A score of over 300 points in the past year has been associated with a serious illness within 2 years. Death of spouse 100 points Divorce 73 Separation 65 Jail term 63
