1 Analyzing Your Own Motivation Ariel Glay Bachelor of Social Work, Walden University PSYC-2004-1: Motivation and Emotion Dr. Renea Coley November 3, 2023
2 Analyzing Your Own Motivation According to Chapter 1, “human motives (desire, emotion, longing, need) push individuals toward some end-state while external events, referred to as incentives and goals, pull individuals there.” (Deckers, 2022, Push and Pull section, pg. 8). One may use push influence in a variety of ways. A number of forms are ones that we all encounter and adhere to on a daily basis, others that we choose to adhere to for our own well-being, and yet others that we make an effort to avoid since they seek to push us to go in a direction that we do not choose to travel. Legislation, expert opinion, industry standards, social mores, and government regulations are all examples of push influences. In spite of the fact that all of these pushes are intended to protect our health and safety, they are still pushes. In order to encourage individuals to take action, pull influences may be used in the form of teamwork, vision, personal charisma, and the utilization of facts and reasoning. My daughter is one of my personal push motivations. In spite of the fact that being a single mother for the past seven years has been nothing short of difficult, my daughter inspires me to be the greatest version of myself that I can be and to achieve success on a daily basis. In the process of bringing up children, you always want them to become more developed copies of yourself. The end goal is for my daughter to be proud of me, and she does this by encouraging me to be the best version of myself that I can be. Another push motivator for me is my new healthcare diagnostic of borderline elevated cholesterol. Having approached the age of 30, I have recently been confronted with a number of new health conditions. One of those conditions is high cholesterol. I was motivated to become more active as a result of my recent diagnosis. As of right now, I am a member of the gym and I make it a point to attend there at least two to three times every week.
3 Pull motivators are another type of motivator that I use to drive myself. At this point in time, the acquisition of my bachelor's degree in social work would be the most significant pull motivation for me. For the past ten years, I have been employed in the field of special education, and my passion lies in working in the field of child welfare. I am motivated to put in a lot of effort and earn my degree because of the love and compassion I have for children and people with special needs. I would like to become a social worker so that I can help with children who come from households with lower incomes and who have a history of special accommodations. While I am attending school, another big motivator that I have is the desire to advance in my current position at work. Over the course of the past few years, I have been promoted multiple times, moving up from the position of teacher's aide to that of a para-professional. One of my goals is to work my way up to the position of care liaison within the inner city's school system. This promotion appeals to me not just because of the monetary worth, but also because it is strongly anchored in the social work realm. According to Chapter 1 of our text “The past resides in our internal motives and the future exists in anticipated external goals and incentives.” (Deckers, 2022, To Be Moved into Action section, pg. 21). Feelings, principles, and aspirations are the internal motivating forces. They are responsible for the emotions of contentment at reaching a goal and disappointment upon falling short. They are born out of your intrinsic drive to develop personally and professionally. Identity and obsession are the two main types of internal forces. Motivating elements that are not beyond an individual's control are known as external motivational forces. A few people call these kinds of forces "pressure." It would be a mistake to see these factors as negative, even though they do exert some pressure. There are two types of these pressures: duty and urgency. In my case, I feel that there's a nice harmony between the internal and external forces that drive me. My external
