Caudill 1 Session 4 Q & A Erica Caudill Adult Seminar Studies II Mike Voris 2 November 2023 Read Genesis 37:1-36 in your Bible. What were the circumstances that led to Joseph’s brothers’ treatment of him? Joseph’s brothers were very jealous of him. Joseph told his brothers that they would eventually bow down to him, which also caused them much jealousy. It also did not help that Joseph was his father’s favorite and his father showed his favoritism by giving Joseph a robe. (coat of many colors) This also made Joseph’s brothers so enraged with jealousy, that they plotted to kill him. Read Genesis 39. In Genesis 39, what character traits do you see emerge in Joseph in response to his encounter with Potiphar’s wife? Joseph was steadfast in his faithfulness to God and his master. He refused to have anything to do with Potiphar’s wife, even when she continued to tempt him day in and day out. Joseph had integrity. Read Genesis 40 and 41. In these passages, what circumstances led to Joseph’s favor with the king? The Pharoah had a dream, which no one in the whole land could interpret. The cupmaker had remember that earlier Joseph had interpreted his dream correctly, so he told the Pharoah this. The Pharoah called Joseph to him to interpret his dream. He was so impressed with Joseph, that he put Joseph

Based on this biblical account of Joseph, what characteristics do you see in Joseph that led to his position of influence and leadership? How does this connect to your readings during your time in this course? Joseph was faithful to God, even though he was thrown in the dungeon. When the Pharoah called Joseph to interpret his dream, Joseph told the Pharoah, “ I cannot do it, but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.” (Genesis 41:16) Joesph gave all the glory to God, when he could have very well earned more favor with the Pharaoh if he would have claimed the interpretation as his own and not God’s doing. This connects to my reading in this course by reminding me that I should remain faithful and what works I do should be for God and not for human masters. ( Colossians 3:23) Based on your experience as a leader or with leaders you have worked with, what are two principles of leadership you can take from the story of Joseph and apply to effective leadership? Use the verses in the passages to support each principle. Principle 1-Joseph was honest. When he was a servant in Potipher’s house, he was tempted many times by Potipher’s wife. He resisted temptation and was a man of integrity. (Genesis 39:8) I would apply honesty to being an effective leader because being an honest leader is mandatory for having people follow your principles. Also, people would not want to follow a dishonest leader. Principle 2- Joseph was empathetic. Even after Joseph revealed to his brothers who he was, he asked the brothers to fetch his father, Jacob and come back to
