1. Through the experience of practicing yoga, I have a heightened sense of awareness of my body’s connection to the brain. As Jay (2016) emphasizes, mindfulness is understanding this connection so that one can reduce stress through mediation, where yoga becomes a mediated approach in reducing stress (through mindfulness). I now have an elevated sense of awareness of the tension that my body holds due to stress, and can work toward reducing this stress through yoga as a medium (Jay, 2016). The calm, relaxing outcomes are beneficial and align with the commitment achieved throughout this exercise routine. 2. I still want to become more flexible. A specific goal was the ability to do a head stand, and I am working toward reaching that milestone. With respect to mediation, focusing on my breath has been the biggest improvement. The breath tells us what we need to know, and listening to the breath tells us how the body is feeling, responding, and functioning (Jay, 2016). I take more time to listen to the breath and evaluate how it is connecting with my thoughts, mindfulness and values. The biggest improvement in meditation has been in using my breath as a tool. 3. Finding a routine was a challenge. Self-care has been an element of my discovery and development. That is, I have realized that for meditation to work, and for yoga to be effective, I need to work on external areas. I need to be focused on other areas of my life so that yoga can be more impactful. Finding a routine in the morning set a developmental baseline. By embracing the routine as a benefit instead of a barrier (or an inconvenience), I got over the initial challenges, focused more on self-determination, and incorporated self-care as a routine practice which elevated my response to yoga and heightened my awareness, mindfulness, and capacity to become more effective in using yoga as a long- term activity.
