Final Project Part 2 Logan Wood Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling, Walden University COUN 6626: Research Methodology and Program Evaluation Dr. Torey Bethke July 16, 2023
Research question Is Child Play Therapy effective for treating sexually abused children with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) DSM-5-TR (F43.10) Identifying relevant research While using the Walden Library, I searched journals by using keywords such as PTSD, DSM-5, children, sexual abuse, and child play therapy. I ensured that each article I reviewed met the requirements of being published within the last 10 years and was peer-reviewed. To meet the requirements of both qualitative and quantitative research articles, I chose three that differed between explaining the symptoms of PTSD is in children, a research study focused on a population of children living with PTSD due to sexual abuse, and an article that explored the use of Play Therapy with children suffering from PTSD. Article 1 Citation Miragoli, S., Procaccia, R., & Di Blasio, P. (2014). Language use and PTSD symptoms: Content analyses of allegations of child sexual abuse.  Journal of Forensic Psychology Practice 14 (5), 355–382. https://doi.org/10.1080/15228932.2014.970423 Summary
The purpose of the article, Language Use and PTSD Symptoms: Content Analyses of Allegations of Child Sexual Abuse, was to recognize the symptoms of PTSD in children, the effects of PTSD in a child’s life, and explore how children narrarate their own experiences associated with PTSD. This article specifically focuses on children with PTSD who have experienced sexual assault trauma, like Chloe. The article uses research such as written narratives from children, interviews with children, court evidence, reports from the children’s environment such as teachers, and other literature. The overall study meets the criteria for qualitative methods. The findings strongly related young age to higher risk of PTSD. With Chloe being only 8 years old, she is at higher risk for PTSD and parallels to many of the symptoms that the study’s population also exhibited.
