Final Project Part 1 Logan Wood Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling, Walden University COUN 6626: Research Methodology and Program Evaluation Dr. Torey Bethke July 2, 20213
Case Conceptualization Chloe 8-year-old African American girl that was placed in Department of Human Services foster care due to substantiated allegations of sexual abuse. The abuse is suspected to have begun around the age of 5, but was confirmed when found her biological mother allowed the abuse in return for drugs. Since, Chloe’s biological mother’s parental rights have been terminated. Chloe now lives with her foster parents. Presenting Problem Chloe was referred by her teachers due to poor academic progress that is fueled by Chloe’s anxiety, self-isolation, and lacking social and emotional development. Her foster mother also reports that Chloe displays distress when separated from her foster mother emotionally and physically. Chloe responds to the separation by chewing her fingernails till they bleed. Based on Chloe’s behaviors, it is possible that she suffers with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) DSM-5-TR (F43.10) ( Psychiatry online | DSM library 2013). Counseling Intervention Based on Chloe’s case study, I would choose Child Play Therapy (CPT) to address her interpersonal conflict, process emotions, and pinpoint the severity of the sexual abuse. With the information given and more data collected such as through a ACE score test, personal sessions with Chloe, and shared information from other influences in the child’s life, a more tailored treatment plan can be created. Child Play Therapy has been shown to be effective in assessing the extent of sexual abuse from conversation while also giving the abused child a sense of control in a playful environment.
Research question Is Child Play Therapy effective for treating sexually abused children with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) DSM-5-TR (F43.10)
