PSY 215 Module Five Milestone Template Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. For this milestone, you will use the Four D’s diagnostic indicators to analyze one behavior that might impair a person’s adaptive daily functioning. You will determine if that behavior could potentially represent a clinical disorder. Use your template to address the rubric criteria listed below with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet. Support your answers with a credible source when necessary. From the list in the Module Five Milestone Guidelines and Rubric, select one behavior that might impair a person’s adaptive daily functioning, then address the following: Depression Distress: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior causes distress as characterized by mental or emotional imbalance. Depression can cause distress if an individual is experiencing sadness daily. Although, experiencing sadness is normal, dealing with such emotion daily can cause distress, which can make it hard for one to complete daily life functions. According to What is Depression “Symptoms can range from mild to severe and can lead to a variety of physical problems, as well as emotional problems” (Torres, 2020). Loss of interest in activities, food, and people are all symptoms of depression. Feeling worthless and even guilty are symptoms of depression that could potentially lead an individual to ending their life if lead to thoughts of death and suicide. 1
Dysfunction: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior causes dysfunction by interfering with adaptive daily functioning. Major depressive disorder is a condition affecting more than 120 million people according to Functional Impairment in Patients with Major… ( Hammer-Helmich, 2018). Individuals with depression can experience a diminished ability to concentrate, recurrent thought of death, an extreme loss of energy, and even significant weightless. This all could result in an interruption of daily functioning by causing one to stay in bed all day. Lack of energy could lead to fatigue and potentially causing the individual to skip daily task like keeping up with chores around the house or even taking care of oneself. Danger: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior presents as a danger to self or others. Depression can be a danger to oneself and to others due to excessive thoughts of death and/or suicide. It can lead to potential chronic health condition such as, cardiac issues due to stress and anxiety from overthinking and overeating. People with depression can be at risk for substance abuse if they turn to drugs and/or alcohol to cope with life stressors instead of seeking the proper help from a licensed medical professional. Deviance: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior deviates from normality. Unfortunately, individuals with depression do not always have a clear mind which means they are not able to think and act rationally. Someone who is struggling with depression may not handle a stressful situation like someone who has not been clinically diagnosed 2
with the disorder. Which could lead to societal judgment since the individual did not handle the situation in a “normal” manner. 3
