If you had the opportunity to treat a sexual disorder (you can discuss a particular one or address them more broadly), what challenges do you think you would face? Try to think about the entire process of interviewing, assessment, and treatment. If I had an opportunity to treat a sexual disorder, it would probably be hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). This is a lack or absence of for sexual activity or interest. The challenges I would probably face with this disorder is having to ask personal and intimate questions in a way that the patient would not be embarrassed. I would have to try to make them feel comfortable enough to answer the questions I will need to ask. I would have to determine by asking the questions if the patient is being honest. During the interview process, I would take my time with the patient. I would listen and allow them to do most of the talking. I would also ask about any current or past traumatic or stressful events. I would ask questions about home, work and family life. I would ask them why they feel the way that they feel about sex. The assessment would include finding out if the symptoms defines this disorder based on the patient responses. I would assess what happen before and after the change. The treatment would include counseling with both parties with cognitive therapy. Sex therapy is another option for treatment. •What do you think will help ensure the best treatment outcomes for people with pedophilic disorder? Why? Pedophilic disorder is someone have intense sexually arousing fantasies or urges involving sexual activity with underage children. I think the best treatment options for this disorder is psychotherapy. Getting to the root cause of this disorder. They could have suffered abuse or a dramatic trauma. I believe there is always a why to what people do, whether it is a disorder of not. I don’t think someone would just wake up one morning and decide to have a pedophilic disorder. I think it could be something from childhood that went unseen or ignored. It grew up with the person and became a normal way of thinking. Response 1 I agree that a non-judgmental approach allow the patient to be transparent. This is a sensitive issue to discuss for a man. For many men, their entire self-esteem and manhood is wrapped up in the ability to perform like a man in every way. When they are unable to perform, they fell like a failure. I think going to the doctor probably would not be a man’s first choice due to embarrassment. I think it would eventually force them or the encouragement of a spouse. There are several physical and mental causes of this disorder. This disorder deals with reduced blood flow, so I think this disorder easily assessed and treated with natural medication. I think CBT is another good option to assess any psychological causes. I agree that some people are less willing to seek help for pedophilic disorder. I think this is the case because they don’t believe that they have a disorder. I think they believe it is normal. Yes, CBT is a good option for treatment to assess the psychological causes. This is a very serious disorder. I think the children that are wrongly harmed in this situation are left with psychological problems and it continues with another person needing help. The cycle has to be broken.
Response 2. You are correct to say that the atmosphere has to be welcoming. I think you have to have to ability to gain the patient’s trust. They will have to know that their privacy will remain private. I don’t know too much about gender dysphoria. When a person feel strongly that their gender does not match their biology, this can be really confusing. They would mostly likely experience stress, depression or anxiety. CBT would probably be a good treatment option. I agree that someone with pedophilic disorder should be treated individual or on case by case basis. I think that some people experience with this disorder can be deeper than others. Some people may not take a long time to recover while another person may take years or relapse after a treatment. Yes, I think cognitive theory is a method of treatment for this disorder. Confrontation with victims could possibly make it real for the person with the disorder. But I think this should happen after ongoing treatment, so they will be able to see how their actions affected the other person. I think this was a very good option as part of the treatment.
