In 1095 Pope Urban II called the First Crusade. After reading the document, "Pope
Urban's Speech Calling for a Crusade," answer the following question in a detailed fully
developed paragraph:
In this document, Pope Urban II is speaking to a group of Frankish (French) knights,
urging them to go on a Crusade to the Holy Land. What does he say to them, in the
course of his speech, to convince them to go? Give specific examples / quotes from the
speech.
In the document “Pope Urban’s Speech Calling for a Crusade,” Pope Urban II urges the Frankish
knights to crusade the Holy Land by promising forgiveness of sin, their eternal glory, and
emphasizing their solemn duty. Pope Urban II promised that it was their duty to retake the Holy
Land as he said “Whose duty is it to avenge this and recover that land, if not yours?” As well as
promising participants that their sins would be forgiven if they fought in the Crusade. Lastly, he
spoke of eternal glory in the service of God, essentially sacrificing their life for God and
resulting in them going to Heaven. He said, “Set out on this journey and you will obtain the
remission of your sins and be sure of the incorruptible glory of the kingdom of heaven.” Proving
if these knights set out on this expedition, they would be gloriously saved by God, even in death.
