Emma Rhodes Theology and Life Read: Carmen Joy Imes, Bearing God's Name, pp. 40-76 January 16, 2024 Summary: Chapter 3: In chapter 3, the main focus is the significance of the Ten Commandments written on two tablets. The significance of the commandments written on two tablets is one tablet represents Yahweh and the second represents the Israelites and the people. The two tablets were put in the holy tabernacle, next to each other, representing the unity between the two tablets (God and his people). The first commandments focus on how we are supposed to live associated with Christ. The last six commandments focus on how we treat others with how we love God. “In the covenant community, every part of life is an expression of worship and loyalty to the God who has committed himself to these people. How they treat others reveals their hearts toward God.” (Imes, Page 42). Overall, I learned from Chapter 3 that the commandments were not the final word and that we must continue to live a life according to his commandments to be obedient. Chapter 4: At the beginning of chapter 4, it talks about the Ten Commandments and what other instructions God has for us. Exodus chapters 20 through 23 are also known as the “Book of the Covenant,” going into 23, which talks about the other commandments God has for us. “ The instructions flesh out what covenant faithfulness looks like in a host of areas: proper worship, fair employment practices, reasonable penalties in case of injury, penalties for theft or loss of someone’s property, responsibility toward the community’s most vulnerable members, proper
conduct in a lawsuit, celebration of holy festivals.” (Imes, Page 58). Later it goes on to talk about when the Israelites turned their backs on God. But, God had a plan to rescue them and build a place where they could view the presence of the holy place from a distance. Overall, Chapter 4 focuses on the aftermath of the Ten Commandments and how we are supposed to live our lives according to the laws and instructions he has for us. Lastly, I liked this quote from chapter 4, “The sacrificial instructions are laced with grace. Yahweh provides clear steps for restoration of a broken relationship and forgiveness of sin.” (Imes, Page 74).
