What would spirituality be according to your own worldview? How do you believe that your conception of spirituality would influence the way in which you care for patients? My own worldview doesn’t necessarily fit into a box; I have cafeteria style/salad bar beliefs and views that others may not understand. I feel there is something greater than myself, I am spiritual but am nondenominational, I have a purpose to help people, whether it is a teacher, a nurse, a friend, daughter, wife or mother. I have my own life experiences to draw from; this helps me to better empathize and sympathize with my patients. My own traumatic experience in childhood helped shape me into who I am, the friends I had just out of high school had shown me a different side of mental well-being and gave me exposure to be able to recognize when someone is experiencing crisis and offer a calm presence when they are ready to communicate. There are religions that condemn others for their worldviews and aren’t as accepting as they claim to be. I choose not to hate and respect individuals for their differences and care for each with respect to their wishes, spiritual, cultural and personal needs. I have much to learn in relation to cultural differences living in a rural area, where most of the population is of similar culture and spirituality. There are pieces from the bible that I bring into my daily life as well as promote, the golden rule: Matthew 7:12 “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets” translated to be treat others as you wish to be treated. We are all vulnerable in our lives, at one time or another, being a nurse you care for a multitude of patients in their most vulnerable of times. I treat them as I would want my family to be cared for, with honesty, dignity and respect. I can understand and at times agree with many other viewpoints/spirituality, when working with patients it is essential to develop compassion and understanding of those with different views from your own. -Debbie References Cafeteria religion: Spiritual, but not religious.
