•
What was Jesus's point in the teaching?
Your answer in 75-100 words:
The point of Jesus’s teaching in Matthew 7:15-23 is to beware of people who claim to
speak for God, false prophets. Those who do can lead them astray and be deceitful.
“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they
are ferocious wolves” (Matthew 7:15 NIV) It also teaches us that everyone who claims
to follow Jesus does, nor will they enter His kingdom of heaven, we must fully commit
ourselves to Him. “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name
drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?” Then I will tell them
plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!” (Matthew 7:22-23 NIV)
•
How might someone from an atheist or pantheistic worldview see the
concepts of this passage differently?
Your answer in 75-100 words:
Those who hold an atheist worldview may interpret the false prophet warning in
Matthew 7:15-23 as a reminder to critically assess claims, rather than accept them
without question because some that hold the atheist worldview rely on critical thinking
and evidence-based reasoning. Those who hold a pantheistic worldview may
understand Matthew 7:15-23 as motivation to trust their intuition of what is right and
what is wrong, rather than relying just on religious belief because they rely on the value
of inner wisdom and intuition in guiding our actions.
•
What does this teaching reveal about Jesus?
Your answer in 75-100 words:
One aspect revealed in the teaching in Matthew 7:15-23 is a true prophet can be
determined by their fruit and their actions. “By their fruit you will recognize them. “Do
people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree
bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” (Matthew 7:16-17 NIV) Jesus stresses
how it is important to assess character and the behavior of people that claim spiritual
power, highlighting practical and ethical aspects of faith, rather than religious rituals or
appearances. It also reveals that knowing Him personally and having a genuine
relationship with Him will allow them to enter His Kingdom in Heaven showing His
ability as the supreme judge in determining one’s salvation and His holy command.
•
Select one of the following passages in which Jesus makes statements about his
nature and purpose: Matthew 9:1-8; Matthew 9:9-13; Luke 7:18-23; John 5:16-18;
John 10:25-38; John 14:5-11. Answer the following with in-text citations from a
commentary in the topic Resources.
The commentary used should be included on a
reference page at the end of this document.

What is Jesus saying about his nature and the purpose of his ministry? What is
the significance of this claim?
Your answer in 250-300 words:
Matthew 9:1-8 speaks about when Jesus heals a paralyzed man in publicly. It shows
Jesus’s power to forgive sins, Jesus says, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”
(Matthew 9:2 NIV) This caused the teachers to question Jesus and accuse Him of
blasphemy. So, Jesus does not just declare His power to forgive sin, but He also
combines this power with His likeness as the Son of Man. “But I want you to know
that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” (Matthew 9:6 NIV) By Him
doing this He claimed a divine role and power, showing a special relationship with
God. It reveals not just a physical healing, but restoration and redemption of people at a
spiritual level, in my opinion, a holistic nature of His ministry. He is not just saving and
healing everyone spiritually, but he is healing and saving their faith, so the significance
is vast. All those who had lost faith, had it restored because of him. Bringing God’s
servants back to Him and restoring their hope they lost in being saved.
