Seven Elements of the Gospel
In the book, “The Discipleship Gospel,” the authors provide the readers with seven
fundamental components of what the gospel is. Rather than providing a chronological
description of the process of the gospel, the author provides these seven distinct aspects of the
gospel which are always truly true for all people. The first aspect of the gospel is in the name
itself. From the Greek word
euangelion,
this word means “good news.” This good news is the
fulfillment of the promise of the Old Testament and is realized in the resurrection of Christ.
Important to this part of the gospel is that the word
euangelion
is not merely a noun, but it is a
proclamation indicating the need for those who have received it to also share it (Psalm 96:2-3).
1
The first “four elements” can be observed in Matthew 1:14, in which it is defined that the
kingdom of God is here. This is the declarative statement that calls for three imperative
responses: to repent of sin, to believe in the gospel, and to follow Jesus. The declarative
statement demonstrates the reality of the good news, or what the good news is, and the
imperatives are the responses that this good news should drive others to follow.
2
The final three elements of the gospel are these three words that are necessary for the
gospel to be the good news that it is. It must be Christ, He must have been killed for our sins, and
he must have been raised again (1 Corinthians 15:1-5). Because of these three important
components of the gospel, can share good news, and should therefore also share it with others. If
we want to accept the gospel, we must accept all seven of these elements of the Gospel.
