Old Testament Story Board Part 1
Eternity Created
In the beginning, eternity was created. In the beginning, there was no end. For, in the
beginning, there was God. God is, and therefore eternity is. In the beginning when God created
the heavens and the earth" (
Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version,
1997, Genesis1:1). God,
being omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient, gives way to perfection and flawlessness.
Within His timing, God created man. "... Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of
the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being"
(
Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version,
1997, Genesis 2:7).
From man, He created woman"
"And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her
to the man," (
Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version,
1997, Genesis 2:22).
God and Adam see a welcome gift at the point of a woman's creation. "Then the man
said, "This, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman,
for out of Man this one was taken," (
Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version,
1997, Genesis
2:23). Adam finds himself no longer alone in the Garden of Eden, and so is created the union of a
man a "d a woman. "Therefore, a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and
they become one flesh" (
Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version,
1997, Genesis 2:24).
As soon as man and woman exist together, human relationships begin. Each subject plays
a particular role in creating a union and the actions that occur within that given union. "for
example, "... She took of its fruit, and ate, and she gave some to her husband who was with him,
and he ate" (
Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version,
1997, Genesis 3:7). Adam took food
from his wife, and ate it without concern about its location of origin. This implies a sense of trust
within their union, as new and undeveloped as it may have been. Before the world, before God
3
called the world into creation, was a state of nothing. This is a difficult concept to even fathom,
for how does one envision nothing? For even a thought to occur, something must be in mind.
This is the precept of faith, trusting, not unquestioningly, but intentionally. "The earth was a
formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the
face of the waters" (
Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version,
1997, Genesis 1:2). What is
became because of who God is. Created with an assumed intention" of offering utopia. "Then
God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and
God separated the light from the darkness" (
Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version,
1997,
Genesis 1:3-4).
Before God deemed the presence of day and night, he separated the darkness from the
light. Light offers hope, possibility, and grace. The first gift given was a world made of light and
the potential for growth and direction.
Martin Luther once said, "The created is an adequate means for the Creator" (Luther,
1546). After creating day and night, God set out to fill the land with all things living, and until
the fall from grace by Adam and Eve, God was pleased with His creation. God's interaction with
His design took a drastic turn in the fall. "The Lord God said to the serpent, 'Because you have
done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures'" (
Holy Bible, New
Revised Standard Version,
1997, Genesis 3:14). "To the woman he said, 'I will greatly increase
your pangs in childbearing; in pain, you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for
your husband, and he shall rule over you'" (
Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version,
1997,
Genesis 3:16). In the moment that Eve trusted the serpent, sin became real. All future
relationships with God were impacted. At that moment, the perfection of creation was tainted and
needed reconciliation, which can only occur through salvation.
