In
Urban Legends of the Old Testament
, read four chapters and respond to the following items:
List the four chapters you read for this discussion and provide a brief summary of
each chapter.
Discuss at least one area from your reading where your understanding of the passage
was either changed or strengthened by the background information provided.
Why do you think people accept interpretations of Scripture that aren't historically
accurate?
Chapter 3 (Women Were Created Inferior to Men) starts by telling the story of Adam
and how God created a woman to be a suitable companion to Adam. The reason we know
this woman was inferior to Adam is because she is referred to as “helper”. A helper is
someone who comes under a superior to assist the superior in a job or duty. For a woman
to be a “helper” and “complement” a man is translated as “corresponding to” and
“suitable” which refers to being in front of. The reference to woman as man’s helper does
not lessen this equality. God was a helper to Israel just like woman was a helper to man.
This chapter changed my idea of why women were created. I have not studied Genesis 2
in depth, and I have heard others speak about it incorrectly. I always had the impression
women were somewhat less than men.
Chapter 4 (The Virgin Birth Was Prophesied in Genesis) talks about how
references to the “seed” of a woman in the Old Testament argue against anyone reading
Genesis 3:15 as a prophecy of a virginal conception. The phrase “seed of a woman” is
merely identifying Eve as the mother of all living and the progenitor of the human race.
There are many references in the Old Testament to the women’s seed being a natural way
of referring to a mother and her child. This chapter did change up my understanding of
the virgin birth. It left me a little confused so it is something I will need to study more.
Chapter 21 (If Americans Repent, God Promises to Fix Our Nation) refers to the
legendary teaching on 2 Chronicles 7:14. This verse tells us that if Americans,
particularly the leaders of our country, would humble themselves before the Lord
Almighty and pray to him, if they would turn from all their sins, God will do three things.
He will hear their prayer requests, forgive their sins, and heal our great land. 2 Chronicles
7:14 is not a promise that God will fix the American government but instead is referring
to the nation of Israel. The promises made in this verse need to be understood in light of
the change in covenant. Christians today can apply this verse to the church. This chapter
really helped me understand that every verse has a deeper meaning and sometimes what
you see on the surface is not the answer. After the book explained the true meaning of this
verse, I now understand that it is not a promise to fix America if we just do one simple
thing.
Chapter 35 (God Has Promised You a Bright and Prosperous Future) refers to
Jeremiah 29:11. This verse states if you know the Lord and have enough faith, God will
bless you and help you to be successful. It is a very popular bible verse and also one of
the most misused passages in all of the Bible. The people who were the recipients of the
promise in this verse were living under harsh conditions and would do so for the rest of
their life. The words “well-being”, “welfare”, “to prosper you” and “peace” translate to a
wholeness and peace much broader than financial blessing or prosperity. This chapter
strengthened my understand of the verse. I already had an overall idea of what the verse
meant but now I have a deeper understanding. I know God will not promise us an easy
life, but it will all be worth it in the end.
When people fail to study the word of God, they will accept interpretations of
scripture that is not always accurate. People look for the easy way out instead of doing
the work themselves. I believe that we should open our mind to other interpretations of
the Bible but also do our own research. Do not settle for what someone else tells you.
