Describe two examples of ways that American culture has influenced the general
understanding of the gospel in the United States (ie. salvation gospel vs. kingdom gospel)?
Response: Salvation Gospel primarily focuses on individualistic salvation, which focuses on the
idea that if people have faith in Jesus Christ, eternal life will be granted, and our sins will be
forgiven. I feel that individuals now a day really worry about themselves and what they can do
for them, not about others. The idea of salvation Gospel relating to Individualistic Salvation
relates to how society can be today and just worrying about themselves. The process of accepting
Jesus Christ is also seen as an individualistic approach because it is a personal decision.
Kingdom gospel focuses on the kingdom of God, which is a common thing in the teachings of
Jesus in the New Testament. It emphasizes Gods’ Kingdom on earth and the role of believers in
society. Unlike salvation Gospel Kingdom Gospel puts a big emphasis on working together as
believers. Social Justice could be considered a good example of how American culture has
influenced the Kingdom Gospel. American Culture has many movements related to social justice
which focus on making sure that the world is a fair and just place. I think that these movement
can be seen as a way that the Gospel has become more important.

Discuss two passages of Scripture (or two parts of the Story with scriptural references)
from the Old Testament and how they have expanded your understanding of the gospel.
The first must be a specific example from Professor Dent’s lectures (referencing the Act
of the story and the scriptural passage). The second must be from the textbook
(referencing the Act of the story and page number from the book).
Response: One of the passages of scripture that helped expand my understanding of the
Gospel from Professor Dent’s lectures was Gen. 3:14 – 3:21 (Act 2) where the scripture
discusses God’s response to sin. The passage identifies Adam and Eves consequences from
the garden of Eden and the hardships that come with existence now due to their sin. This
passage helped me to better understand what Gods response to sin was and the reasoning
behind it. It helps to understand Humanity’s relationship with the Lord. There was also
promise of a future offspring of a woman who will crush the serpent's head in this passage
which can be seen as a foreshadow of Jesus Christ, the Savior who came to redeem humanity
from sin. A big part of this passage shows me the lords Grace. In the textbook it talks about
Genesis 6:1-8 (act 3, pg.33) and it tells the story of how evil reaches a climax among
humankind and God decides to destroy the world through a great flood. This passage helps
my understanding of the Gospel because it serves almost as a reminder of the need for
redemption and salvation from sin.

Discuss two passages of Scripture (or two parts of the Story with scriptural references)
from the New Testament and how they have expanded your understanding of the gospel.
The first must be a specific example from Professor Dent’s lectures (referencing the Act
of the story and the scriptural passage). The second must be from the textbook
(referencing the Act of the story and page number from the book).
Response: Matthew 27-Matthew 28:20 (Act 4) has expanded my understanding of the Gospel
by providing insight into the crucifixion of Jesus, to the resurrection, and all the way up to
where Jesus calls upon his followers on a mountain in Galilee, to make disciples of and
baptize all nations in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All of this together
gives me a very deep insight into why Jesus died on the cross for our sins and the impact it
has on our understanding today. Acts 1:3-5 (Act 5, pg. 140) begins with the risen Christ
appearing to his disciples over a period of forty days, during which there is a lot of talk about
the kingdom of God and the coming of the spirit. This helps me understand the Gospel better
because Jesus presented himself again which provides proof of his resurrection, which is the
central event of Christian faith. This also helps me to understand how the Gospel was spread
and how Jesus used his disciples.

The textbook identifies several ways that culture influences our reading and/or
understanding of the story of the world. Discuss two cultural insights from the book (with
page number references) and how they impact your understanding of the story of the
world.
Response: Pg. 3 mentions how our culture now has tacitly adopted a pluralist vision and how
pressure for harmony among cultures and nations has made us view the bible as just another in
the world’s library of religious stories. This impacts the understanding of the story of the world
when culture is telling us there are multiple stories when the Bible is the only true story of the
world. On Pg. 15 it mentions that culture is making something of the world, developing the
garden into a flourishing city. The biblical story calls us to bring every kind of cultural activity
within the service of God. This helps my understanding of the world because it shows that we
don’t have to exclude culture from God, but we can bring God into our culture. I find this very
important because culture can be things such as music, art, sports, and etc., we can use all of
these things to honor God in multiple ways.
5.
In the textbook, the authors identify specific ways Jesus instructs and prepares his
disciples to be citizens of the kingdom distinctively in contrast to this world. Identify two
examples that are given (10pts). Discuss at least one specific example of how to live this
out today.
