A Biblical Worldview
Introduction
According to Merriam-Webster, a worldview is defined as “a particular philosophy of life
or conception of the world.” Everyone has a worldview; it is shaped by their culture, society,
experiences, and their religion or faith. A worldview shapes a person’s outlook on everything, so
it is imperative to understand one’s worldview to understand one’s decisions and rationalizations.
The integration of a biblical worldview and Chiristian philosophy into educational practice
significantly impacts pedagogy, curriculum development, and student outcomes, fostering a
holistic approach that emphasizes character formation, critical thinking, purposeful learning and
social responsibility.
Biblical Worldview
A worldview without God is a life without purpose. It is imperative in order to live a
Godly life that we, as Chiristans, allow God to seep into every aspect of our lives and truly make
God the foundation. A worldview is like someone having glasses; without glasses, things are out
of focus and blurry messes. A worldview allows people to put things into perspective (Phillips,
2008, p 4). A biblical worldview is essentially taking the teachings and principles from the Bible
and applying them to your day to day living. This is anchored in the belief that according to
scripture, God is the creator of the universe and the ultimate authority. This worldview believes
in and acknowledges that there are absolute truths and moral standards derived from scripture in
the Bible, helping people discern from what is right and wrong
.
A biblical worldview generally
believes that human beings were created in the image of God, yet have fallen due to sin (Genesis,
3
chapters 1-3) and can receive redemption through the ultimate salvation which is the belief in
Jesus Christ. A biblical worldview shapes one’s understanding of various aspects of life, such as
logical decision making, values and morals
.
This is not just a set of beliefs, but instead a
foundation for one’s life and how to live it in the most God-honoring way as possible (Esqueda,
2014, p 93)
.
Christian Philosophy of Education
In tandem with having a biblical worldview, it is important to understand what the
Christian philosophy of education is. This philosophy is not only about gaining knowledge and
the ability to comprehend and share, but also developing a holistic approach and outlook to
understand one’s self, one’s relationship with God and the world in which we live. This
philosophy strongly aims to cultivate knowledge, but also create a well-rounded God-like
individual by integrating faith and learning together
.
A few of the major components of a
Chiristian philosophy is a God-centered approach, character formation, service/social
responsibility, purposeful learning and community/relationships (Phillips, 2008, pp 14-15).
Having a God-centered approach allows us to look at metaphysical questions and thoughts by
reminding us that God is our creator and the beginning and end of everything
.
Character
formation falls under the axiology branch, as it relates to morals and values; a Christian
philosophy strongly emphasizes virtues such as honesty, compassion, integrity, love and humility
(Peterson, 2001, p 33)
.
The social and service aspect of Chirstian philosophy focuses on the idea
that education received and knowledge gained should equip individuals with the need (and want)
to serve society and make a positive impact
.
Purposeful learning helps individuals find and enter
into their God given calling. Not only are individuals supposed to learn for personal gain, but to
also take that knowledge and help make society and the community a better place
