Name: Lola Mohan Bible Study Project: Observation Template Passage: Acts 19:11-22 A. I have read Acts 19:11-22 in both a formal translation (NASB, NRSV, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com Yes No Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both
translations cover this story. These similarities and differences should be related to the text itself rather than the translation. For example, an observation like, “The formal translation is harder to read” is not an acceptable observation because it deals with the translation itself rather than the text. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find, providing that you meet the minimum amount for each one. Similarity – Both translations mention that if you touched Paul's handkerchief or apron and were ill or had an evil spirit, you were healed, and the evil spirits were cast out. Similarity – Both translations mention that when the Jews and Greeks heard about the priests, they confessed and repented from their sins. They
gathered all their books and set them on fire publicly. Difference – The NIV states that the people who mingled in sin collected their books and burned them; the value was fifty thousand drachmas. Difference - The NRSV states that the people who mingled in sin collected their books and burned them; the value was fifty thousand silver coins. Difference - The Niv states that when it became known to the Jews and Greeks what took place, they were
“Seized with fear , and the name of the Lord was held in high honor.” Acts 19:17 (NIV)
Difference- The NRSV states that “...everyone was awestruck and the name of the Lord Jesus was praised.” Acts 19: 17 (NRSV) C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying. 1. Main characters: (List them) Paul Priests 2. Plot: (50-100 words)
Acts 19 talks about how God performed His purpose through His apostle Paul, the miracle of healing the ill, and the ability to cast out evil spirits. The Priests of the sons of Sceva attempt to cast out demons, but the possessed character attacks the priest, leaving them wounded and unclothed. When the news was spread, all the practitioners of magic brought their books and burned them in public. This also helped spread the word and helped many turn towards God and praise Him. The total value of them was fifty thousand drachmas(NIV). Paul then stayed in Asia and sent Timothy and Erastus to Macedonia. 3. Story structure: (50-100 words) Note: Plot and Story Structure are not the same thing (see the tutorial and student example) Introduction:
