The three notable elements from this weeks material that helped me to deepen my understanding
of working with people who have gender and/or sexual orientation differences would be
inclusion, diversity and unity. Reading about inclusion and how God wants everyone to be
included was very insightful. I read 1st Corinthians 12:24-25 and it advised of the following
scripture. " While the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the
body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. This
makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other (Staff)".
This scripture basically advises that we are all one in Christ. It helped me to understand that God
does not want anyone left out. I did some further reading on the art of inclusion and found that
by the year 2045 more than fifty percent of the population in the United States will be minorities
(Anderson, 2023). This got me thinking that the gender and sexual orientation population will
likely also increase. With this uprising of diversity it is important to be inclusive of everyone as a
decrease in diversity will not be happening anytime soon and even if it did happen you should
act how the Lord would want you to act. From a biblical worldview standpoint, Proverbs six and
sixteen the six gives guidance for what the lord hates. One of which is a person who sows
discord in a family (
Proverbs 6: NLT bible: Youversion
). This includes people who stir up
discord in the community in relation to people who have gender and/or sexual orientation
differences. This tells us how we should act biblically speaking. It seems that God wants us all
together as we all make up the body of Christ. This is where unity comes into play. I read an
article that advised that gay-integrative theorists and conservative religious people often fail to
appreciate each other’s perspective (Yarhouse & Burkett, 2002). This is where unity comes into
play because at the end of the day we are all apart of the body of Christ and need to respect each
others views, as we are serving a much higher purpose to serve and please God. These three
elements impacted me because it has changed my perspective. I now look at things from a view
of what would god want me to do or how would god want me to act in relation to different
people. I will now act as God would want me to and not fleshly. they impact my future as a
counselor because now I will be helping people based on my biblical worldview.
