Discussion: The most unexpected aspect of Khadra's family's conservative Islam rather than the teachings of the Quran, their frame of view is molded by their cultural customs and explanations. Khadra dissects and reconstructs her Muslim identity and Islamic values. Khadra's attempts to reclaim her identity in connection to Mecca, experience a sense of belonging, and find a home there all fail miserably. Khadra's interactions and conflicts with many religions, including various interpretations of Islam, play a significant role in how her identity is always changing. Another example; is the time she chooses to take off her scarf. She steps outdoors to bask in the sunlight, allowing the rays to reach her body and fill her with a sense of warmth, love, strength, and comfort. She understands how unjust the choices she made between individuals, faiths, and good and evil were, and that these distinctions were the root of all of her difficulties and inconsistencies. Khadra's abortion causes her to get divorced, but more crucially, it causes her to become distant from her family since her father won't let her go to college because it's a mixed setting. I can somewhat identify with Khadra's viewpoints on religious tolerance since they hold that all religions are just different paths that ultimately lead to the same place. In my opinion, her beliefs on religious tolerance are crucial for individuals to get along and be equal in society, especially in groups that practice Islam.
Response : Hello Lesley, Your discussion post was well-written and well-organized. You did a wonderful job of explaining Khadra's family's conservative Islam viewpoint. As explained above, you mentioned that readers are encouraged by this representation to think about the depth and diversity of Muslim identity and lifestyles through Khadra's family. Even though they experienced discrimination and separation from the larger society, Khadra's family was able to preserve a feeling of belonging inside their small community. How did Khadra's traits affect the other characters in the story? Due to Khadra's abortion, she becomes divorced, but more crucially, she becomes isolated from her family, who stop communicating with her, and her Indiana community. Her relationship with her home, community, family, and religion has been broken. Did you anticipate Khadra to first rebel against her rigid upbringing in religion? She is aware of how unfair her decisions regarding people, beliefs, and good and evil were, and that these differences were the cause of all of her problems and contradictions. Well Done!
