W10 Directed Study
Option 1:
Part A:
Read Enos 1:1–8. Identify in writing what seemed to be the catalyst that turned Enos
from hunting for food to a concern for the welfare of his own soul. Then write a description of
what Enos did to come unto Christ. What did he say was “swept away?” What did the Lord say
was the source of this forgiveness?
Enos wanted a remission of his sins. Between verses 1-4, His sins could have contributed to his
feelings and spiritual hunger. He realized he needed the forgiveness of the Savior and prayed, he
labored diligently and provided as an example to help others to salvation (5-27). When Enos
shares about “swept away” he is talking about the guilt that he was feeling, through prayer it
has his spiritual hunger. The source of forgiveness was the faith Enos had in the Savior, he had
evidence of faith that the Lord recognized.
Part B:
Read Enos 1:9–19 and make note of where Enos’s concern went after he had received
forgiveness of his own sins.
Who did Enos pray for?
Enos prayed for his people as well as for the Lamanites who sought out to destroy the
records of the Nephites. He prayed for the safety of the records he had passed down to him
from his father.
What did he want for them?
He prayed for the spiritual welfare of the Nephites and Lamanites.
In verses 9, 11, and 13, who did Enos pray for besides himself?
He prayed for his people and for the Lamanites.
Part C:
According to Enos 1:19 and 23, what did Enos’s faith lead him to do?
He wanted others to witness the Savior’s love, so as he prayed, went through the
repentance process and was forgiven, he wanted others to recognize that too. He labored away
and served his people.
He wanted what President Hunter shared, “Any time we experience the
blessings of the Atonement in our lives, we cannot help but have a concern for the welfare of
[others] “A great indicator of one’s personal conversion is the desire to share the gospel with
others” (
Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Howard W. Hunter
[2015], 127, 128).
Part D:
After reading Enos 1:26–27, list the blessing Enos mentioned that comes to those with
faith and good works.
Some of the blessings were:
1.
Repentance, I think a lot of people don’t see this as a blessing because it requires work
and a process that could take a while, but this is always the first step when feeling guilt.
2.
Prayer, an opportunity that allows us to make a personal connection with our Heavenly
Father and Savior.
3.
Forgiveness through repentance, this is an important one. It’s important to recognize
when the burdens we carry are lifted. This helps us better understand the process of
repentance and whether it was done correctly.
4.
Salvation, our salvation comes from the merits and grace of the Savior. Its through our
continued obedience, labor, diligence, and trust in the Savior that allows us to work
towards our salvation as we go through the tests and trials we face in this life.
