Video 1: Explain some of the possible reasons for Paul writing the letter to the Romans. See N.T. Wright’s video and Gorman’s text. - Paul's letter to the Romans aims to clarify his understanding of the gospel and to encourage the local Christian community there. Paul explores a variety of subjects throughout the letter, including the inherent sinfulness of people, the righteousness obtained through faith in Jesus Christ, and the role of the law in the context of salvation. In conclusion, the letter primarily aims to strengthen the Roman Christians' faith by outlining the gospel message. What does the phrase “the righteousness of God” mean according to N.T. Wright? - N. T. Wright explains how he believes that this phrase is used in the old testament sense by Paul. Wright goes on to explain how this phrase highlights the fact that it is God's own determination to be just to be faithful to be true to his word and to do justice and to be true to the word which is the covenant of his people. Video 2: What is Paul’s relationship with the Roman church? Why does Paul have to tread carefully when speaking to the church in Rome? - Paul’s relationship with the Roman church is not the best, this is because of the relationship that he was surrounded by with the Jews and Gentiles. We can also see in Michael J. Gorman’s text of Paul's relationship with the Roman church, where he goes on to talk about how the relationship was tearing the community apart. Paul must tread carefully when speaking to the church of Rome due to the controversy that filled the area within the Jews and Gentiles. The Gentiles are not Paul’s converts in Rome and this is one of the main reasons he must tread carefully around some hot button issues within Rome. What is the change of attitude that Paul is calling for in Romans? - Paul lays out his own Gospel throughout the first 8 chapters but once he gets to chapters 9 through 11 it slaps the Gentiles across the head. Paul wants a change of attitude adjustment from the Gentile Christians in light of the Jewish Christians; he goes onto say that the Gentile Christians need an attitude change due to the fact that God has not forsaken his first chosen people to Jews, and here is why you need this attitude adjustment about Jews that are with Christ and Jews that are without Christ.
Video 3: What is the tension taking place in Romans? - The main problem or cause for tension in Romans is the cultural clash that happens between the Jewish and the Gentiles. They disagreed on whether non-Jewish Christians ought to keep the Sabbath, eat kosher, get circumcised, and other matters related to how to follow Jesus. Paul wanted to accomplish a few things with this letter. How is the tension reconciled? - Paul writes, everyone is a law breaker, saying that the Gentiles and the Jews are one and the same, they all broke laws, did not obey certain laws, and overall they are all not following the word of Christ. Paul tells the Gentiles and Jews both that they need to all offer their bodies as a living sacrifice, be transformed by the renewing of their minds or the strong are to help the weak. Along with this, in Romans Paul always points to the key, he was never ashamed to proclaim the name of Jesus and his Gospel. “ For the only reason it could be good news that both Gentile and Jew had broken God’s Law is because Jesus had come as their substitute. He picked up the punishments they had earned and obeyed all the laws, so both Jew and Gentile could be made equal at the foot of the cross.”. They are now equal because they both shared Abraham's faith, they are brought by grace into Abraham's family line, and now the Gentile and Jewish finally realize they could only be one with each other because they are one in the body of Christ.
