BIBL360: Methodical Study of Scripture Discussion Thread: The Sufficiency of Scripture The logic or reasoning behind the statement by Kevin DeYoung in Taking God at His Word : “Why the Bible is Knowable, Necessary, and Enough, and What That Means for You and Me, that “If we say revelation is not complete, we must admit that somehow the work of redemption also remains unfinished,” 1 is to imply that there is no one without the other the Word of God is true and the work of Christ through revelation and redemption has already been accomplished through His life, death, burial and resurrection from the dead. DeYoung goes on to say, “And we must not separate redemption from revelation. Both were finished and fulfilled in the son. The Word of God versus the Word of God? The Bible versus Jesus? The Scriptures versus the Son? Hebrews gives no room for these diabolical antitheses.” 2 DeYoung’s argument is a reminder of the inerrancy of scripture stating that “Scripture is enough because the work of Christ is enough. They stand or fall together. The Son’s redemption and the Son’s revelation must both be sufficient, and we must not separate redemption from revelation. Both were finished and fulfilled in the Son.” 3 The full and final revelation was given from God through Christ his only Son and redemption was accomplished through Christ’s blood. As I meditated on the statement, I pondered if I agreed with it or not. I asked myself if both are complete does that mean God does not speak today, or does he not continue to reveal himself to us? I then thought about how we can see God in nature and that he still speaks to us and reveals things to us through the Holy Spirit. With those thoughts in mind, John 14:26 came 1 Kevin DeYoung, Taking God at His Word: Why the Bible is Knowable, Necessary, and enough, and what that Means for You and Me , 1st ed., (Wheaton: Crossway, 2014), 50, Logos Bible Software. 2 DeYoung, Taking God at His Word , 50. 3 Ibid.
to mind that says, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (John 14:26 New International Version). DeYoung also stated “He has shown us all we need to know, believe, and do. There is nothing more to say. And yet, God keeps speaking through what he has already said. “The word of God is living and active” (Heb. 4:12); and when the Scriptures are read, the Holy Spirit still speaks (3:7).” 4 Finally, When Christ spoke his last words on the cross “It is finished.” (John 19:30) that concluded his work on earth and established that only his life and blood could accomplish revelation and the redemption of sins for His people. For those reasons, I agree with DeYoung’s statement. 4 Ibid.
