o
Do you think that the Roman religion was an exact copy of the Greek religion or did it evolve to become distinct in its own way? Justify with relevant examples.
o
Which religious ritual or practice of the Romans do you find fascinating and why?
Greeks and Romans practiced polytheism. Numerous gods venerated by the Romans were mostly Greek in origin. According to (National Geographic, 2023), Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva were the principal gods and goddesses of Roman civilization. Jupiter was worshipped by the Romans as the sky deity, in charge of all facets of existence. Jupiter is only focused on defending the republics of Rome. The main deity was Jupiter (Dillon, 2019). As the queen of the gods, Juno was connected to giving birth. Jupiter's sister and wife was named Juno. Another Roman goddess who was influenced by Greek mythology is Venus. Venus was the fertility, love, and beauty goddess. Apollo is the deity of poetry, music, and the sun.
Even while the Romans had their own gods that did not have Greek ancestry, like Janus, they owed numerous gods to the Greeks. The god Janus had two faces, signifying the spirit of passes. The god of the Tiber River, which flows through Rome, was Janus's son.
The Greek religion was not a direct replica of Roman religion. Greeks and Romans practiced polytheism, worshiping a multitude of deities. Rome grew and conquered numerous states, including Greece, bringing gods and goddesses like Apollo with them. Roman religion had its own gods and beliefs, although being influenced by Greek religion.
The sacrifice and magic aspects of Roman religious rituals are what I found so fascinating. There were goals for both magic and sacrifice. It was utilized to impart power to the gods and other sacred entities. Roman population growth and access to food and protection depended on sacrifice (Britannica, 2023). It was popular to sacrifice animals, including sheep. While some forms of magic were illegal in Rome, others, like the Vestal Virgins who guaranteed the fertility of the land, were permitted. It's incredible how the Romans used magic to make their territories more fertile and offered sacrifices to appease their god.
