Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A. I have read Acts 19:11-22 in both a formal translation (NASB, NRSV, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (
NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com
o
Yes
o
No
B.
Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. These similarities and differences should be related to the text itself rather than the translation. For example, an observation like, “The formal translation is harder to read” is not an acceptable observation because it deals with the translation itself rather than the text. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find providing that you meet the minimum amount for each one.
I chose to read the ESV and the NIV.
1.
Similarity – In both the ESV and NIV, the Bible talks about miracles that are happening from the hands of Paul and that the handkerchiefs and aprons were taken
to heal the sick and rid of evil spirits.
2.
Similarity – In both the ESV and NIV, the Bible talks about how the priests were casting demons from the possessed. They both even went into detail about the Seven Sons of Sceva trying to perform an exorcist and the evil spirit stated he did not know who they were, but he recognized the names he was using, both Jesus and
Paul, to try to cast him out. Due to the Priests using Jesus’ and Paul’s names with what they thought was authority, the Demon, in a sense laughed in their faces as they thought they had some type of Authority like Jesus and Paul these priests were nobodies. To prove a point of how “little” the priests were, the Demon beat the priests and they came running out naked and bloody. 3.
Similarity – In both the ESV and NIV, the Bible talks about those who practiced magic and burned their books/scrolls in public for all to see. As this was happening,
the word of the Lord spread throughout.
4.
Difference – In the ESV, it states the possessed man leaped on the priest, mastered them, overpowered them, and left the house naked and wounded. The NIV states the priests were overpowered by the possessed man, who beat them and the priest ran out naked and bloody.

5.
Difference – The ESV states they practice magic arts and burn their books, however, the NIV states they practiced sorcery and burned their scrolls.
6.
Difference - The ESV states the burning of their books valued 50,000 silver, however the NIV states 50,000 drachmas. I didn’t realize the drachmas were silver until I read the ESV.
C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying.
1. Main characters: (List them) Paul, Seven Sons of Sceva
2. Plot: (50-100 words)
Luke tells the story of the healing that God is doing through Paul. He goes on to explain how there were priests who were using the Lord’s name as well as Paul’s name in vain to perform exorcists. One demon showed the priests that they had no authority to do so. This news spread fast showing the people how mighty the Lord is. These people were changing their ways away from Pagan Religions to become believers in the Lord Jesus.
3. Story structure: (50-100 words)
Note: Plot and Story Structure are not the same thing (see the tutorial and student example)
Introduction:
God is performing healing miracles through Paul and even allowing the garments to be used on others to heal the sick and possessed. Inciting Incident:
Seven Son of Sceva performing exorcisms in the name of Jesus and Paul.
Rising Action:
Demon tells the priests he does not know who he is yet he knows Jesus and Paul.
Climax:
Demon jumps and beats the priests causing them to run out naked and bloody.
Falling Action:
The people in the city fall witness to these actions and soon destroy their Pagan beliefs and become followers of Lord Jesus.
Resolution: Paul has decided to continue to travel to spread the word of Jesus.
D. List basic observations about this passage using the “Key Question” for observation. Remember to consult and review chapters 17 and 37 in Everyday Bible Study
. This will help you be more detailed in your answers to “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.” Please be detailed and specific.

BIBL 104
Paul is the one who is performing the healing.
Seven Sons of Sceva are the priests who are performing exorcisms in the name of Jesus and Paul.
Jews and Greeks who confess their belief in the Lord.
Timothy and Erastus were Paul’s helpers whom he sent to Macedonia.
3.
Where:
Acts 19:11-22 takes place in Ephesus.
4.
When:
This story takes place after Jesus has been crucified. This story is telling about
the Gospel of Paul and his impact on the Jesus’ Ministry.
5.
Why:
Why did the story start out with explaining God healing through Paul?
o
I believe it is important to know the impact that Paul was having and what he was doing in the name of our Lord, especially when the priests
decided to use Paul’s name.
Why did the Seven Sons of Sceva decide to use Jesus’s and Paul’s name in exorcism?
o
They believed they had some sort of power. They wanted to feel important and powerful.
Why did the evil spirit beat the Seven Sons of Sceva when they tried to perform the exorcism?
o
I believe the evil spirits wanted to show the Seven Sons of Sceva that they truly did not know Jesus and therefore they could not use his name with authority.
Why did the Pagan worshippers destroy their books/scrolls?
o
They wanted everyone to see they were now followers of Jesus Christ.
6.
How:
How to Paul have the all power to heal those who were sick and possessed but
the Seven Sons of Sceva did not?
o
Paul knew Jesus, believed in Jesus, and shared his Gospel. The Seven Sons of Sceva did not and simply were trying to use Jesus’s and Paul’s
names to get a following/popularity.
How did this negatively impact the Seven Sons of Sceva?
o
The Seven Sons of Sceva became very aware when a man possessed with the evil spirit attacked them and they ran out wounded, bleeding, and naked that the evil spirit could see through them. The evil spirit knew who Jesus and Paul were, the good they did, their message, and the power they held. However, the evil spirit knew there was not enough “light” in the Seven Sons of Sceva for them to be using Jesus’s
and Paul’s name like that.
