Follow the steps below to complete this activity. Save this document with your name in the file name. When you have completed this activity and answered all the questions, follow the instructions in your course to submit the document for grading and feedback.
Step 01
Carefully read and review Section 6-9, 13 and 17 of Doctrine and Covenants.
Step 02
Use 200-300 words
to describe three
principles from the D&C sections studied.
For each principle found, including the following:
Name of the principle
(For example: God will not give us commandments without providing a way for us to accomplish what He has commanded.)
Scripture Reference
(This should be the reference from the D&C sections studied that inspired your selection of this principle)
Brief Quote
(From another scripture reference, the student manual, a conference talk, or other doctrinal source that supports the doctrine of the principle you are advocating.)
Personal Explanation
(Your explanation of your interpretation of this principle.)
Personal Spiritual Witness, D&C 6:23: This verse provides insights into how God communicates with us and imparts revelation. Oliver is told by the Lord that He has already confirmed the truth of the restoration to him, a confirmation received through the serene feelings inspired by the Holy Ghost. The Book of Mormon emphasizes that "by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." On my mission I got to hear President Eyring speak. He mentioned
that he prays daily for confirmation about the book of Mormon so how much more should I be doing? And while I have received a spiritual testimony affirming the truthfulness of the Church, there are moments when I need a reminder. Methods of Revelation, D&C 9:8: This verse contains guidance from the Lord to Oliver Cowdrey regarding personal revelation. It stands as one of the most profound descriptions of personal revelation in the scriptures. It elucidates the sensations associated with the Spirit and offers guidance on how we can seek revelation for ourselves. I often find that revelation flows more readily into my life when I invest the necessary work and effort before approaching God with
my questions and the insights I've gained, seeking confirmation from Him. This pattern mirrors the approach the brother of Jared took when constructing the barges in the Book of Mormon. Ether 4:3 illustrates the brother of Jared approaching the Lord with his plan and is seeking revelation. He asks the Lord "Touch these stones, Oh Lord, with thy finger, and prepare them that they may shine forth in the darkness" We should follow this same pattern when seeking personal revelation
Bearing witness to the miracles we have witnessed from God, D&C 17:3: In this verse, the Lord addresses the three witnesses of the Book of Mormon, urging them to go forth and testify about the miraculous events they observed concerning the gold plates and the translation of the Book of Mormon. The Bible provides a noteworthy example in Paul, who, after God restores
his sight, dedicates the remainder of his life to proclaiming Christ to the world. We are encouraged to emulate this guidance by going out and testifying to the world about the power of God and the miracles He has manifested in our lives.
Step 03
Use 300-400 words
to answer the following questions:
1.
What questions do you have concerning revelation?
2.
What are some of the challenges or misconceptions people frequently have concerning revelation?
3.
Which of these principles of revelation you discovered have blessed your life or could bless your life if properly applied?
I often think about how I can figure out if the messages I get are from God or just my own thoughts. Also, I'm curious about whether God gives revelations to people who don't follow our
faith. There are some challenges and misunderstandings about revelations. We read stories in the scriptures about Joseph Smith's first vision or Lehi's vision of the tree of life and think that revelations come with big shows of God's power. But most of the time, it's more about the Holy
Ghost giving us nudges – like a "still, small voice." I usually recognize revelations when I feel peaceful and warm, especially when I'm prompted to do good or help someone.
I believe if I applied the revelation principle that God taught to Oliver more in my life, I'd
be blessed and be able to help others more. God told Oliver to "Study it out in your mind, then ask me if it be right, and if it is right, I will cause your bosom to burn within you." Sometimes, we don't put in enough effort to get revelations. If we paid more attention to the spirit and did our part, we could understand more about God and His plan for us. I like the story Elder Bruce
