Journal Submission (Week 4) – Matthew Barroca The Atonement, Prompt #1:  Before continuing to any discussion of the major terms in this lesson, take a moment to define or explain in your learning journal what the words  atonement redemption , and  reconciliation  already mean to you. The Atonement of Jesus Christ is what allows me and everyone who has been and will be on this Earth to overcome the effects of sin and death. Redemption to me is the opportunity to be saved or delivered through the grave of Christ, which was made possible by Christ’s Atonement. Reconciliation to me is the process of restoring a harmonious relationship between me and God, which is possible through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The Atonement, Prompt #2:  In a couple of sentences, write about how the Creation, the Fall, the Resurrection, and grace are connected to the terms  atonement redemption , and  reconciliation . The Creation was necessary to establish the framework for God’s plan, providing the opportunity for His children to experience mortality and experience agency. The Fall introduced sin and spiritual death, which necessitated the Atonement of Jesus Christ, providing redemption from sin and reconciliation with God through His grace. The Resurrection ensures that all will be raised from the dead. The Atonement, Prompt #3:  Before watching the video clip, make a list in your learning journal of all the ways that we as mortals are different from God. Then, explain in a couple of sentences how the Atonement of Jesus Christ helps us overcome these obstacles and become like Him. - We are mortal, which makes us subject to aging and death, while God is immortal and eternal - Mortals have limited understanding and perception compared to God, who has infinite knowledge and wisdom - Mortals are imperfect and are prone to mistakes and sin, while God is perfect without sin - Mortals have finite power and abilities while is omnipotent and capable of all things Christ’s Atonement makes it possible for us to repent of our sins and to be forgiven, allowing us to progress towards perfection. By applying Christ’s atonement in our lives, we can access divine grace and to develop qualities and attributes that align closely with those of God. The Atonement, Prompt #4:  Which comes first: putting off the natural man or receiving power through the Atonement of Jesus Christ? What do we need to do to become sanctified
through the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Your response to these questions should be in 2–3 sentences. We need to put off the natural man before receiving power through the Atonement of Jesus Christ and we do this by striving to overcome our innate tendencies towards sins and selfishness through repentance. In order to become sanctified through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we need to have faith and repent sincerely of our sins, to receive ordinances, and to continually strive to align our lives with His will through obedience and discipleship. The Atonement, Prompt #5:  What does it mean to you that the Lord’s Atonement is “proffered grace” rather than “conditional grace,” and why is this distinction important? Your response should be in 3–4 sentences. Proffered grace means that it is freely extended to all without any attached conditions, which reflects God’s unconditional love and mercy. This is different from conditional grace because all are given forgiveness and redemption, regardless of their worthiness or ability to meet certain requirements. This distinction is important because it highlights the inclusive nature of God’s love and provides hope and reassurance to all who seek God’s mercy. The Atonement, Prompt #6:  Answer the following question in a short paragraph. How have you experienced the Savior’s therapeutic and enabling grace in your life? I have felt’ the Savior’s grace extended towards me in many instances of my life. I have felt His grace when I have prayed for repentance. But I also have felt His grace when I am need of comfort and healing in difficult circumstances. In such circumstances, I have felt that I am enough. The Atonement, Prompt #7:  In your learning journal, explain in a couple of sentences how every aspect of the Atonement of Jesus Christ is a gift of His grace, even those that are in some sense “conditional.” Forgiveness, redemption, and reconciliation with God are aspects of the Atonement of Jesus Christ that are only made possible through His grace because it was through His infinite love and sacrifice. While elements such as repentance and obedience are dependent on us and may seem conditional, we are enabled through His Grace. We can be empowered to sexercise our faith I order to repent sincerely and to strive to align ourselves with His teachings. The Atonement, Prompt #8:  Identify one principle from this lesson that was most important to you. How could you implement this principle in your life? One principle that was important for me was understanding Christ’s Atonement in relation to His “proffered grace”. Knowing this concept and knowing its distinction from “conditional grace” has helped me recognize the unconditional love and mercy of my
