Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A.
How does this passage from Acts fit within the metanarrative of the Bible? State what type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation) and explain why you believe this to be so? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (150-300 words) in length. It may be good to review chapter 6 in Everyday Bible Study
to recall what each of these four themes are about.
The Bible has a metanarrative that consists of four themes of creation, the fall, and redemption, and new creation (Cartwright and Hulshof, p. 39). The passage about Paul’s mission in Ephesus in Acts 19.11-22 shows the theme of New Creation. The theme of New Creation focuses on how the end of the story where God restores his relationship with us. God wants to reestablish fellowship with us that was lost (Cartwright and Hulshof, p. 44). To have this relationship, people need to know about God otherwise this would not be possible. In the passage, God is performing miracles through Paul, and as a result, the people in Ephesus take drastic action to show their faith in God as the one true God. In Acts 19.20, it is stated “In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power” (NIV). This shows how faith in him spread through Paul’s work. By knowing God, people can redeem and restore their relationship with him.
B.
How does your theological principle from Acts 19:11-22 fit with the rest of the Scripture?
This principle is the one you have written out in 1-3 sentences in the Interpretation Assignment. If your theological principle is a true Biblical principle, it will be reflected throughout the Scriptures. Where is the theological principle discovered in this New Testament narrative found elsewhere in the Scriptures? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (150-300 words) in length. Be specific. Give, explain, and cite your supporting
passage(s) from Scripture.
The passage reflects God’s authority and sovereignty that is displayed throughout the Bible. In Romans 13.1, it is said “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except the which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” The verse plainly states that God is the one who allows governing authorities to exist, and because he is allowing them, God is still the greatest authority over all. The power rest with him because “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1.1). The world is his creation; therefore, he has supreme
control over it. In Psalms 135.6, it says “The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.” This demonstrates that there are no limitations to his will. He is the creator, and he can control what happens. It puts it into perspective God’s power and sovereignty. His authority was recognized in the passage by the people of Ephesus and why they took drastic measures to follow the Lord in the previously studied passage.
C.
How does your theological principle from this passage in Acts reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ? State and explain at least one way that the theological principle of Page 1 of 2

this passage correlates with something of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (150-300 words) in length. Be specific. Give, explain, and cite your supporting passage(s) from Scripture. The passage supports the relationship between Jesus Christ and God, and how Jesus is recognized as divine through his deeds and miracles. Throughout his ministry, Jesus performed numerous miracles demonstrating how God was working through him. In Acts
2.22, it is said “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by
God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourself know.” This conveys that God worked through Jesus to further his plan of redemption for humanity. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, it is said “Then Jesus came to them
and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28.18). This verse demonstrates that God’s power can be found through Jesus, his son, because they are unified as one after Jesus’ death. The power of Christ is explicitly recognized by the evil spirit in Acts 19.15, “One day the evil spirit answered them, ‘Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?’” This shows Jesus’ sovereignty being recognized. The examples show that God is the ultimate authority of the world and how Jesus is a part of his plan to rescue and redeem us.
