Chapter 2 – Overcoming Obstacles Ever since sin entered the world, we deal with several obstacles since our births. Sometimes, we feel hopeless because of a lie saying God does not care about us, but bad things do not come from Him; He allows them to teach lessons. The textbook explains Jacob’s story and how his issues brought him to God, “Jacob spent years running for his life, instead of trusting God’s promises. But God graciously pursued him until He brought him home. And that same God will pursue you until you surrender to His will and His plan for your life.” This quote tells us that the Lord will never give up on us since He hopes we will seek Him more than anyone (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 47). Chapter 6 – No More Excuses All of us have made excuses at least two thousand times in our lives whenever we feel angry, scared, or confused; but we do it to avoid our issues. However, God does not take no for an answer because He intends to use our special talents for the common good and face our innermost fears. The textbook says “The time for Gideon’s excuses had come to an end. It was time for action! The angel commanded Gideon to tear down his father’s altar of Baal – a Canaanite storm god” (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 95). The quote was an example of God using a coward to do His works because He knew Gideon could do anything with His help, even though everyone called Gideon a coward. Chapter 9 – Reaching Out to Others It can be tough reaching out to your peers, especially when you have a close relationship with someone specific. For example, the book says, “Unexpressed love is often interpreted as no love at all. In some cases, it may even be perceived as resentment or rejection” (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 137). The quote tells that us if we do not express love to anyone, it will make our family, friends, and romantic partners believe there is no love between us. It is not enough to say you love someone; you must display your affection. Sometimes, God nudges us to talk to an acquaintance since He called us to show love to others, which is good since it will let them know people care for them. Chapter 10 – Realizing Your Goals Everyone has goals they want to accomplish such as going to college or finishing a career to satisfy the desire for doing what they love. Even so, people will not always support your goals because they may think you are too small or do not have what it takes. For example, David wished to kill Goliath to win the battle for his side, but no one had faith in him. “David recognized that the cause and purpose of God were at stake. That’s why he volunteered to fight Goliath” (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016, p. 155). This portion shows us that we should never run
away from conflict just because others are telling us to do so since God is here to protect us from any harm.
