Sources of Study in Theology
Theology is the study of God, or the self-revelation of God (Etzel & Small). Among the many sources of theology, one in particular that stands out is experience. We are all created in the image of God, but we are all created uniquely. Because of this everyone brings different views and worldviews to the table when discussing everything including theology. No person has
ever had the exact same experiences in the exact same timeline as another person. And no matter if they went through the same experience together, because of previous experiences, they would now interpret or react to this experience in a different way. Because we were created in God's image, we have that innate ability to create and these very specific attributes that were gifted to us by God should be utilized in the study of theology. With this, we’re able to bring multiple takes on the same passages of scripture and when we communicate that, we open ourselves up to a greater and deeper understanding of God and His word. An example of experience at work in scripture would be the gospels. The Bible has four separate accounts of the same story as told by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The gospels all give a unique account of the story of Christ and each one serves a different purpose. Without the genealogies of Matthew, there would be no unification of the old and new testaments. In Mark, we have a central focus on Jesus’ ministry which demonstrates all the miracles that took place. In Luke, we have eyewitness accounts that demonstrate validity and His perfection. And lastly, in John we have the emphasis that Jesus was
the Son of God who came down to Earth in human form. As a Christian, it is crucial to read all the gospels to fully understand who Jesus is and His importance. Just as these different perspectives are displayed in the Bible, it’s important for us to do the same and share our perspectives with others so we can build our understanding and the understanding of others.
