Points to Ponder: Worship in the Earthly Life of Jesus
Ardelia Butts
WRSP 510: Biblical Foundations of Worship
April 23, 2023
Jesus is our prime example of what Godly living is, was, and always will be. He took the time to honor God in every way and we, as worshippers, should do the very same. When it comes to worshiping God , it is to be noted that God created Man for that purpose—to praise and worship Him. Jesus, God’s Word manifested in human flesh, was no different than we should because He
always found the time to worship God no matter where He was. Jesus came as our example of what to do after God’s silence for over 400 years, giving Man another chance to get things right with God.
1
At this point and time, worship should be the most important part of the believer’s life because worship is the very action that God relishes the most.
Worship for Jesus was an essential part of His life, and He regularly made His appearances in the sanctuary. According to Psalms 150, the believer must spend time worshipping God in His Holy Place.
2
Jesus spent time in the temple, from the time He was twelve years old until He went to the Cross; His main objective was to show honor and reverence to His Father. It is important to realize that worship was necessary for Jesus because He took time to do it when there were many other things that He could have been doing. Jesus’s worship life proves that aside from prayer, worshipping God was His focus. Jesus made His contribution to worship by also being obedient to the call that was on His life. His humbleness allowed Him to worship God
properly, especially when He was baptized.
3
Submission to the Will of God is vital to everyone’s worship and Jesus’s example lets the believer know that no one is exempt; if He did, all people must follow suit.
Jesus also worshipped God consistently through prayer because worship and prayer coincide on a daily basis. Because prayer was one of the most prolific things that Jesus did, it stands to 1

reason that His prayer life was a part of His worship towards God; that should also be the case for the modern believer. Jesus worshipped God through prayer on many occasions, such as His Baptism, before He selected His Disciples, and even when He prayed for Himself. All of these events were monumental times for Jesus and many times before He faced a trial or decided anything of great consequence, He prayed.
4
Jesus showed that prayer and worship should be offered to God so that a clear direction can be given. Often, the mistakes that come along in life are direct results of not consulting God through prayer before making a move.
Jesus, as a member of the Trinity, still stood in awe of God at times and that led Him to praise
God openly for who He was. Jesus gave glory to God on many occasions and when He spoke, He gave so much credit to God for sending Him to do what He was destined to do. Jesus spent a lot of time showering God with praise for being Almighty and took no glory for.
5
One glowing example was when Jesus was raising Lazarus from the dead in the 11
th
chapter of John. Jesus prayed to God and worshipped Him for always being a loving Father and asked that He (God) honor Jesus’s request to raise Lazarus so that they (onlookers) might believe. Jesus was a regular
worshipper, so it is important that we follow His example and worship God as well in Spirit and in Truth. After the Last Supper, Jesus sang hymns with the Disciples to show that worship also goes to God through song.
6
There should never be a limit on what the believer does to honor and
worship God, because Jesus did it all.
