Worship Study Devotional Assignment: Worship as a Way of Life
Rebekah Pettus
WRSP 101: Introduction to Worship Studies
October 9, 2023
Topic:
Spiritual Disciplines (Worship as a Way of Life)
Scripture:
(Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Cry out, “Save us, God our
Savior; gather us and deliver us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name,
and glory in your praise.” (Chronicles 16:34-35).
Narrative:
When I was in Ukraine, there were a lot of kids who I thought would be my best friends for
life, just like we all do at that age. I grew up with all these children, but not long after, I was
adopted at the age of sixteen. You are wondering why I stopped hanging out with the friends I
grew up with all my life and I am here to tell you why. Being a teenager is hard and we all make
decisions that we are not proud of—some people just stop being friends. Sometimes life shows
me and gives me things that are not true and are not part of who I am. When I came to America, I
realized that even my family did not understand who I was. Even when I felt the pain of being
adopted, I still found ways to thank God for the people around me who showed me what God's
love is like. God has given me an adoptive family. The true story is that I wrote a letter to God
and then asked Him to give me a family. I was only 13 years old at that time and then after 2
years, I got a family. God opened my eyes at that time and proved to me that He is real.
Teaching Point:
I chose Chronicles 16:34-35 as my scripture because it discusses God's love and how He
continues eternally. Even though I had to endure throughout my life, God provided me with a
better life and the finest family. I want the children in orphanages to take away from my
devotional that the Lord will send them blessings when the time comes. Another reason for my
choice of Scripture is that while I was torn between an impure life and one centered on God, this
passage stood out to me enormously. My aim is that my experience of being in the same
circumstances as them but being able to change my life and become a Christian would inspire
them. I want children to understand that following the Lord will only bring them blessing after
blessing and that they have other options in life that will not lead them astray. Neuroscientists
and psychologists have objectively demonstrated that teens are more prone to make riskier
decisions and engage in activities that might get them in trouble, not because they are terrible
kids, but because the brain has not completely evolved at this age. 2017 (Bedwell). My prayer is
that the Scripture I picked for my devotional would strike a deep chord inside them, allowing
them to realize that they may come to the Lord, obey His word, and be rewarded for all eternity,
rather than spending a life without knowing Him. I want children to understand that following

Application
:
My spiritual habits are more disciplined, but I wish to be more motivated. The small group
and church are what always motivates me to be closer to God. I need more motivation to read
