Alexandra F. Human Exploitation Week 2 Should juvenile sex offenders be held to the same legal standards as adult offenders? What are the pros and cons of treating juvenile offenders like adult offenders? What should society be doing to address juvenile sex offenders? A legally prohibited sexual offense committed without consent by an offender under the age of eighteen is known as a juvenile sex crime. Threats of violence, coercion, manipulation, and an unequal power dynamic between the perpetrator and the victim are all present in the act (Hunter, J. A. n.d.). I personally believe that juvenile sex offenders be held to the same legal standards as adult offenders, the FBI reports that in the United States between 2019 and 2020, there were 132,091 reported rape incidences and 137,235 offenses. Of those, perpetrators aged 10 to 19 were responsible for 22% of the rape cases. Juveniles have committed more rape offenses than any other age group over the past ten years, according to NIBRS data (Crime Data Explorer. 2021, May 3). Regardless of the offender's age, it's important to uphold responsibility for their heinous acts. A pro of treating juvenile offenders like adult offenders is that justice is more consistent for survivors and the offenders are then added to the sexual offender registry, a con that must be considered is the prospect of receiving a harsher punishment and spending time in an adult detention center. Over time, more and more specialized therapy programs have been accessible to sexual offenders but have since changed since the 1970s, “For many years, treatment for juveniles was largely based on models used with adult sexual offenders. However, as knowledge about the developmental, motivational, and behavioral differences between juvenile and adult sexual offenders has increased, therapeutic interventions for juveniles have become more responsive to the diversity of sexually abusive behaviors and the specific offending-related factors found among adolescents and children (Przybylski, R. 2015, July). Specialized therapy can be the answer towards addressing juvenile sex offenders as it opens the possibility for the offender to have individualized therapy for themselves and understand their actions, right from wrong, and how to proceed with their lives in and out of the correctional facilities Resources: Hunter , J.
