Ashleigh Gilbreath SOC-324 Southern New Hampshire University May 8, 2024 1-3 Journal: Medium and Message Reflection What are the similarities and the differences among the three mediums? The key similarities are that each medium gives the author an outlet for their voice, has the possibility of reaching a large audience, can be used to educate and inform, and all are generally easily accessible. There are several differences between each medium and depending on the audience you want to reach determines the medium you would want to use. The formats of all three are different. Podcasts are audio recordings that typically consist of conversations or interviews, YouTube videos are audio and visual elements, and written papers are text-based. Explain how each medium may be more effective in certain ways. Podcasts are convenient and portable. Individuals can listen to podcasts while they are completing everyday tasks since they are available on most electronic devices. They also provide a sense of intimacy with the spoken word format, and they can range in subject matter. Podcasts are best used when the content depends on verbal communication or storytelling. In the podcast
provided, the host wants to relay the importance of judicial reform in juveniles that focuses on building the community rather than the knee-jerk reaction of sending the youth through the court system which traps them into a cycle of criminal offenses (Harrison, 2015). YouTube videos allow for visual engagement. The demonstration that can take place in these videos makes it easier for some topics to be better explained. YouTube videos are excellent for when the content uses tutorials. The YouTube video “SOC-324: Advocacy for Women Living With HIV/AIDS” explains what needs to be done to raise awareness and how the public can help with this (“SOC-324: Advocacy for Women Living with HIV/AIDS (CC),” 2019). Written papers allow for a deeper exploration of topics, can carry scholarly authority, and foster critical thinking. Written papers are also permanent records that can be reviewed years later. Written work is best used when presenting research and when formal language is needed in academic or professional settings. Which one appeals to you most? Podcasts are my general go-to when exploring new topics. As stated above, podcasts are portable. As someone who has ADHD, it seems like I have to keep my hands busy, and my mind engaged at all times. Podcasts allow me to listen while I am cleaning my home, driving in my vehicle, and walking down the aisles of grocery stores. With written work, it is hard for me to block all distractions and concentrate on what I am reading, and videos require me to stop everything and watch. As a busy mom, I truly do not have time for that. Which medium do you wish to use for your final project and why?
