Tricia Jones HUSS220 – Theory, Assess, & Intervention of Addiction Assessment and Treatment Recommendations February 3, 2024
Understanding that there is usually reasons behind an individual choosing to use substances is important. This case with our client Jen (19, female) is no different. I believe there is some past trauma or history that has led to her using and I think that it would be extremely beneficial to her to dig deep and understand where these feelings have came from. I would first like to start off with some detox services. While detoxing from heroin is not necessarily life threatening, it can be. The symptoms of withdraw include, but are not limited to sweating, fast pulse, increased breathing rate, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps and spasms along with insomnia. These typically begin 8 to 24 hours after last use and can last anywhere from 3 to 10 days. While the symptoms alone are not life threatening, dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea can cause imbalances in the body creating life threatening effects. Seeing as Jens usage is pretty high, so as a precautionary action I would like her to receive these services. As stated in the beginning, I truly believe that there are always reasons behind someone turning to substances. I think in order to really dig deep and give Jen the chance to understand and face the reasons that she initially started using, individual therapy would be beneficial. I am recommending cognitive behavioral therapy as part of her plan. Understanding the actions and moments that bring an individual to decide that they need some sort of substance to feel normal or to take their mind off of things going on in their life is very much treatable, but you have to be able to face it first. Jen initially started using pills with her friends on the weekends, but I’d like her to dig deeper to see if perhaps it was a time of high stress for her.
I also feel that this will be beneficial by giving Jen the tools and resources to stay away from future usage. While I am hopeful that Jen wants to change and I feel that she is going to take advantage of her fresh start, understanding how to say no and why it is important to say no every time that she finds herself in a position of being offered. This will also give her the tools to find new friends who are sober as well and will understand her journey a little bit better. Jen’s family seems to be really interested in her well being and they seem like a sturdy support group. For this reason I would like to incorporate some family therapy into her treatment plan. Research has show that individuals who have the support of their family have a 90% improvement in mental health, and in about 73% of cases the individuals behavior improves according to Cleveland Clinic. It has been reported that her father has also struggled with the use of pills previously, so not only is he supportive of his daughters improvement, he understands the trials that she will soon face while starting recovery. I also think that it will be beneficial for Jen to see and understand that her parents are not trying to control her, but that they are trying to stop her from going so far down this path that she feels it is impossible for her to get right and also before she ends up losing everything. My last recommendation is going to be outpatient therapy. Outpatient therapy is specifically designed to ensure that addicts are able to recognize and understand how to avoid relapse. Outpatient therapy is a group setting, and it gives lessons and support based on and centered around addiction specifically. The difference between therapy and outpatient services is the fact that therapy is specifically about the individual and what they can do to make changes, and outpatient therapy gives the chance to hear
